Standing Apostle. Artist: Giovanni Bandini (called Giovanni dell'Opera) (Italian, Castello 1540-1599 Florence). Dimensions: 15 x 6 1/8 in. (38.1 x 15.6 cm). Date: mid-16th century.This study by the sculptor Giovanni Bandini belongs to a series of drawings representing single standing male apostles and prophets that was once attributed to his teacher, Baccio Bandinelli. The sheet probably relates to one of several projects Bandini executed for the cathedral of Florence, most likely the relief sculptures of the choir screen, which were begun by Bandinelli in 1547 and completed by Bandini in 1572. The standing figure may be a preparatory study for a series of sculpted apostles set in niches, also intended for the cathedral. The sharply contrasting areas of light and dark endow the figure with a sense of volume and angularity. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Sultan 1774 Jean Honoré Fragonard French Despite its traditional title, this sheet represents not a sultan but a model dressed in Turkish attire. Posing and drawing figures in exotic costume was a long-standing tradition at the Académie de France in Rome where Fragonard had studieda practice connected both to masquerades and to the training of young history painters. However, this sheet dates to 1774, when Fragonard visited Rome a second time, this time in the company of his patron, Pierre Jacques Onésyme Bergeret de Grancourt. As with many of his brown wash drawings of the 1770s, the wash here is intentionally diluted, its transparency leaving visible the freely executed black chalk underdrawing.A modern copy of this drawing, once considered to be the original, is also in the museum's collection (1972.118.213)..
