Figure in a Fur Trimmed Jacket 1828-81 Romain Cazes This drawing of fur-trimmed garments worn by a lightly sketched form comes from a group of eleven sheets once attribued to Frederic Lord Leighton, but now identified as by Romain Cazes. Cazes was a student of Ingres who painted murals in churches in both Paris and southwest France, and these drawings demonstrate his adherance to academic practice. The latter directs artists to make separate studies of posed nude figures and their garments as compositions are planned. The group were donated to The Museum by Albert Eugene Gallatin, an influential New York collector and critic who promoted "Art for Art's Sake," insisting that aesthetics, rather than narrative or moral concerns, underpins enduring art.. A Woman Distributing Bread from a Basket: Study for "Feed the Hungry," in the Chapel of the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy (Les Oeuvres de Miséricorde), Church of Saint-Eustache, Paris 1850-53 Victor-François-Eloi Biennourry French With a sympathetic gaze, this figure extends a hand offering a loaf of bread, an embodiment of feeding the hungry, one of the seven works of mercy that Biennourry was commissioned to paint with fellow Prix de Rome winner Eugène Damery (1823-1853) for a chapel in the Church of Saint-Eustache in Paris. This was the artists third major religious commission after successfully completing decorations for the Parisian churches of Saint-Roch and Saint-Séverin. The restoration and redecoration of Saint-Eustache from 1842 to 1860 involved more than twenty academic painters, though many, such as Biennourry, are little known today.. The Old Savoyard 1710-1720 France. The Flemish-born artist Jean-Antoine Watteau deviated from his acclaimed scenes of courtly figures in park-like settings (called fÍtes galantes) with this arresting and naturalistic chalk drawing of a humble Savoyard. This elderly vagabond from the Savoy region of France was one of many peasants who, around the turn of the eighteenth century, flocked to Paris, where they tried to eke out livings as chimney sweeps, scavengers, or street entertainers. This old entertainerís props accompany him a large box of curiosities is on his back, and under his arm is a smaller case probably containing his constant companion and coperformer, a furry marmot. Using only two colors of chalk, Watteau depicted the Savoyardís shrewd, humorous face, his tattered clothing, and his bulky paraphernalia with remarkable precision, sensitivity, and humanity. Of the ten extant studies of Savoyards by Watteau, four appear to portray the same salty character seen here. The drawing

Saint Paul ca. 1430 Circle of Jan van Eyck Netherlandish Once attributed to Petrus Christus (1410-1472/73), this drawing on vellum has since been reassigned to an artist in the Circle of Jan van Eyck. It is one of two extant drawings in a series of the twelve Apostles. The vellum is so transparent that it is conceivable that the straight pen lines defining the contours and folds of the drapery were traced from a model and the hatching filled in afterward with point of brush. It is likely that the Lehman drawing and its prototype related to a painting, possibly a grisaille painting, rather than to sculpture.. Saint Paul 459277

A Seated Couple, Embracing ca. 1865 Sir Edward Burne-Jones British Burne-Jones likely made this drawing in the mid-1860s when he was sketching the Parthenon marbles at the British Museum, using chalks on colored paper. While a student at Oxford, Burne-Jones and his close friend William Morris decided to give up their theology degrees and instead pursue artistic careers. Since he lacked formal training, Burne-Jones sought advice from Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin--who lent him prints by Albrecht Dürer to copy--and George Frederic Watts, who advised close study of classical sculpture.
