Two Male Heads after the Antique, the Sons of Laocoön 1600-1610 Netherlands. Surviving drawings in other collections prove that Hendrick Goltzius studied firsthand the famed Laocoˆn group, an ancient Roman sculpture unearthed to great fanfare in the early 1500s. The monument was widely revered as an ideal representation of human torment, made more famous by printed representations.Goltzius created this red-chalk drawing at least a decade after his visit to Rome in 1591, employing specific motifs for his own expressive ends. Extracting the faces of Laocoˆnís sons from the sculptural ensemble and reversing their left-to-right order, Goltzius blended the red chalk to emphasize the protruding volumes of the neck muscles. Two left sides. The cornices of an entablature are supported by a two-legged winged chimera the tail of which is upward curved toward the center, where a helmet is, on top of the stem, between rinceaux. At right: the support is formed by two half-figures, recumbent, of lions ending with upward-turned rinceaux crossing each other. The rinceaux have two branches, one ending in a spiral upon the head of the lions. Upon it stands a swan supporting with neck and wings the top. The other branches join in forming a heart form into which hangs a medllion holding a figure. Usual background. Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on off-white laid paper. Date: ca. 1785-1790.
