This unusual series of action photos of U.S. Coast Guardsmen going through a rigid lifeboat drill depicts the training that teaches them to help others at sea. (No. 3 in a series of 5) Yankee ingenuity scores again, and a New England Coast Guardsman takes a thrilling ride on a homemade aquaplane out in the Pacific just as he once probably "Rode Herd" on the choppy atlantic waves off one of Massachusetts' famed south shore beaches. That's an LCVP off a Coast Guard-manned LST towing Charles H. Huntington, motor machinist's mate first class, of North Weymouth, Mass.

Power Boat - Plus: A rear view of a motor launch fitted with two Rover gas-turbine engines, during a demonstration on the River Thames between Chelsea and Albert-Bridges. The 60-foot launch is fitted with two engines similar in principle to that fitted experimentally into a car and successfully demonstrated at silverstone last March. The Admiralty have placed an order with the Rover company for a small number of these engines. October 12, 1950.

This photograph taken from a U.S. Coast Guard patrol plane off Anguilla Island, Bahamas on Aug. 13, 1963 shows a Cuban Navy PT boat with a Cuban motor launch tied astern. The boats and a Cuban helicopter forcibly removed 19 Cuban refugees from the island. Ten other refugees who hid in the bushes were later rescued by the Coast Guard Cutter Ariadne stationed in Key West, FL.

Woman Skipper Sails Atlantic In 23-Foot Sloop -- Mrs. Ann Davidson, 38, Gloucestershire, England, chats with a reporter in Nassau, Bahamas, Friday after a one-year trip across the Atlantic in the 23-Foot sloop Felicity Ann. She was both becalmed and buffeted by storms during the Long Voyage. Her husband was lost off their Yacht at the start of an Atlantic Voyage four years ago. Photograph of F/V Amparo Near Bimini. This image is one of a set of photographs taken of the fishing vessels involved in a shooting incident 12 March near Bimini. These photos were not released as no Coast Guard action was involved and the vessels were Bahamian and Cuban. The photos were shot with a K-20 aerial camera by an air crewman, and not by one of the rated photographers assigned.

Deep-Sea Oceanographic Buoys Used to Probe Labrador Current. Seen here being lowered into the water from the Coast Guard Cutter Evergreen is one of the three experimental oceanographic buoys which the 1962 Ice Patrol will use to delve into the secrets of the Labrador Current. This current carries icebergs farthermost south along the eastern slopes of the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, where they menace North Atlantic shipping. The buoy carries oceanographic instruments which automatically record the direction and volume of current and sea temperature among other important data, and detects fluctuations and changes in the current. Information collected over long periods by the buoys will enable oceanographics to forecast more accurately the severity of the approaching ice season.

Motorboat Safety - Don't Concentrate Weight on One Side of the Boat. Both of these fishermen cast lines from the port side of their pleasure boat, creating instability of the craft. A bite on a line activating just one man to shift or move to pull in his catch can easily cause the boat to capsize. Neither man is wearing a life preserver.

Boat people is a term that usually refers to refugees or asylum seekers who emigrate in numbers in boats that are sometimes old and crudely made. The term came into common use during the late 1970s with the mass departure of Vietnamese refugees from Communist-controlled Vietnam, following the Vietnam War. Many Vietnamese boat people - though not all - came from the south, the former Republic of Vietnam; also, many were Hoa or ethnic Chinese.
