The caption continues: By Sir Ernest Shackelton's permission from his book "The Heart of the Antarctic," publsihed by. Mr. Heinemann. Shackleton was a British polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. He was one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Shackleton went into McMurdo Sound in 1908. He died in 1922.
