Morning Visit. De Lelie painted this typically Dutch kitchen scene in the tradition of 17th-century genre painting. It probably served as the pendant to the Woman Baking Pancakes in this gallery. Just as in the Golden Age, this painter was interested in rendering the various details with the utmost realism: the basket of vegetables, the earthenware jug, the pewter on the mantelpiece, and the brassware hanging on the white tiled wall.

Teasing a Sleeping Girl. Artist: Gaspare Traversi (Italian, Neapolitan, ca. 1722-1770). Dimensions: 34 1/8 x 42 3/8 in. (86.7 x 107.6 cm). Date: ca. 1760.Little is known of Traversi's career, but he was unquestionably the leading genre painter in eighteenth-century Naples. His pictures parodying the pastimes of the noble classes are particularly striking for their emphatic naturalism and biting wit. The Dissolute Household. Artist: Jan Steen (Dutch, Leiden 1626-1679 Leiden). Dimensions: 42 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. (108 x 90.2 cm). Date: ca. 1663-64.Steen and members of his family modeled for this scene of domestic chaos, which is still called a "Jan Steen Household" in The Netherlands. The company acts out a variety of familiar sins, such as Sloth, Gluttony, Lust (papa and the maid), and other offences--a Bible is trampled, and a beggar is repelled at the door--all heedless of the open watch, suggesting temperance, and the basket hanging like Fate over their heads (the objects in it promise poverty, disease, bad luck, and justice). The only thing refined about the picture is Steen's technique, especially in his wife's costume. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Pleasures of the Seasons: Winter, c. 1730, Johann Georg Platzer, Austrian, 1704 - 1760, 15 x 21 1/2 in. (38.1 x 54.61 cm) (panel)19 3/4 x 26 1/2 in. (50.17 x 67.31 cm) (outer frame), Oil on copper, Austria, 18th century, Its cold outside, but indoors things are heating up. The occupants of this room pass their time drinking, playing cards, and flirting. By the fireplace, two young women tempt an old man with wine and caresses. At the table, two young men cheat an old woman at cards. One pretends to offer advice while holding up a mirror that reveals her cards to her opponent. Youth and old age, honesty and deceit, prompt action and relentless time, are all present here. A sober ancestor portrait of a woman dressed in formal black introduces a moralizing tone. Gazing from her oval frame at this opulent scene of corruption and temptation, she makes a contrast to the foolish old man and woman.

Marriage A-la-Mode: 6. The Lady's Death' by william Hogarth, c1743. Silver tongue has been hanged and the countess has taken poison. Her father - a City alderman - removes the ring from her finger. The scene is a merchant's house near London Bridge.

Taking the Census. Artist: Francis William Edmonds (American, Hudson, New York 1806-1863 Bronxville, New York). Dimensions: 28 x 38 in. (71.1 x 96.5 cm). Date: 1854.The United States Census of 1850 initiated the requirement that heads of households provide information about each of their dependents. The new regulation caused a good deal of confusion. Edmonds's humorous image, which is the earliest known portrayal of the census-taking process, features a father's painstaking efforts to recall his family statistics, while several of his children hide from sight. The small framed portrait of George Washington above the mantel evokes not only the genesis of the country's political system but also the legendary admonition never to tell a lie. The carefully lit interior and wealth of detail in the composition were inspired, in part, by earlier Dutch genre scenes. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Borrowing from the comic stage, Steen identifies the old man as a quack by his peculiar clothing, while the nature of the young lady's malady is suggested by the Cupid over the door, and other intimations like the open bed. A Painter's Studio by Michael Sweerts (1618-1664) oil on canvas, c. 1648-1850. Like so many artists, Sweerts undertook a study trip to Rome. There he painted this scene of a painter's studio, in which all the phases of artistic training are to be seen. At the left a young artist studies a large anatomical figure; piled up at the right are fragments of antique statues.
