Silk: lampas weave; lining: twill tapestry, double locked; overall: 101.6 x 38.1 cm (40 x 15 in.); mounted: 113.7 x 49.5 cm (44 3/4 x 19 1/2 in.). This textile has a repeated design of goatherds piping to goats in a landscape setting. At the top is an inscription reading: Work of the servant of the court, Ab? al-Qu?sim K?sh?n?, year 929.” In the Muslim calendar 929 is equivalent to 1523, but this fabric was woven in the 1900s. This textile emulates examples from the Safavid period (1501-1722), regarded as a high point of Iranian culture.A lampas weave is characterized by the combination of two weave structures with two sets of wefts—the threads over and under which the warp threads are woven. Threads of the pattern weft are laid on top of the background weft to form the design. Lampas is typically woven in silk, sometimes with the addition of metallic thread.

Three pseudo-Egyptian animal gods appear within the diamond shapes. The colors - yellow, tan, brown, deep pink, and red - are overprinted on pink, light-blue, deeper blue, green, and gray. Hieroglyphics and frame are printed in black over a yellow background. In one medallion, kneeling female figure before animal-headed statue is against blue ground, very unevenly applied - possibly by hand. Green is made by printing blue over yellow. Length ca. 1775 Probably Bromley Hall The rare design of this printed cotton reflects two trends prevalent in English decorative arts of the second half of the eighteenth century: the use of birds as decorative motifs, especially in ceramics and porcelains, and the continuing fascination with chinoiserie. Here thin, delicate branches, tied at intervals, rise from the earth and sprout elegantly whimsical blossoms and foliage of various types. Exotic birds are shown in flight or alighting on these slender stems. Two birds confront each other amid decorative rockery, while below four others scratch for food. The inspiration for this design, with its elaborately feathered and crested birds and fanciful foliage, would seem to come not from the several ornithological studies printed in England during the eighteenth century, but rather from the influence of imported Chinese painted wallpapers. Highly unusual is the presence of three small Arabic numbers, 3 7 3, visible at the lower right edge

Piece ca. 1850 French This furnishing textile epitomizes Rococo Revival textiles, with flowers enclosed in asymmetrical cartouches comprised of """ and "S" scrolls. Mid-eighteenth-century Rococo textiles did not make use of the cartouche in this way; this motif has been lifted from other eighteenth-century art forms such as furniture, carved wall panels (boiserie), and silver. Revival styles were particularly popular in the United States, and French textiles were frequently imported for use in upper-class American homes of the mid-nineteenth century. The meshes are festived and equipped with picots. Sloping edges along all sides stem from the pattern and are finished with picots.
