Design for a Waistcoat, Pencil and various gouaches on paper, Design for the embroidery at the border of a man's waistcoat. A kind of moulding is shown along the edge of the waistcoat. Beside its using part is a crenellated border, from which leaves and halves of blossoms grow alternatively. Beneath the pocket edge is a tripartite motif. Its central part consists of half a blossom from which a leaf two scrolls and two feathers rise. It is flanked by scroll and leaf motifs. (25.6 × 25.4 cm), Watercolor on beige paper, France, 19th century, Albert Dammouse was a prolific French decorator of ceramics, primarily active at Sèvres. He made watercolors, such as this design for a plate, so that other skilled craftspeople would have a guide for application of glazes to the wares. This design appears to be part of a series for a lavish floral dinner service.

Branches and Vines Quilt ca. 1875 Ernestine Eberhardt Zaumseil American Working in the later years of the nineteenth century, Ernestine Zaumseil created this extraordinary quilt employing the Tree of Life pattern, a design that has been popular for use on bedcovers since the seventeenth century. The first Tree of Life bedcovers, called palampores”, were of Indian origin and featured a stylized tree bearing fantastical fruits and flowers. An Indian palampore makes up the central panel of quilt 2014.263 in the American Wing's collection. In Zaumseil’s quilt, the trees and branches are much more realistic, in part because she seems to have traced leaves from actual trees and vines to serve as patterns for her appliquéd designs..
