Stencil Japan Edo period (1615-1868)

Makaras, Phoenixes and Flowers, 1200s. Central Asia or Daidu, 13th century. Lampas, silk and gold thread; overall: 51.3 x 75.6 cm (20 3/16 x 29 3/4 in.). Central Asian designers drew from a wide variety of motifs, both imaginary and real. In this silk, rows of soaring phoenixes alternate with rows of makaras. Combining a fish body and tail, wings, and a dragon's head, the makara originated in India as a water creature. With the spread of Buddhism, the motif migrated into the art of Central Asia and, from there, into the art of northern China. In Italy, exotic Central Asian patterns such as this inspired flights of imagination. One such example (seen in the photograph below) shows a creature, strikingly similar to the makara, spewing forth a dragon while a dog walks up its back.

Stencil with Pattern of Seascape with Boats and Shore with Pines 19th century Japan Stencils like these were traditionally used in Japan in a resist-dyeing process to produce lengths of patterned cloth. A length of white cloth was stretched out and paste was applied through the stencil, which was then removed to the next area and the next until the entire length was covered. The cloth was then dyed, usually with indigo, and the areas covered with the paste resisted the dye. In both of these stencils, note that half of the pattern is upside down, resulting in a finished product in which either end can serve as the top.The ground is cut away in the smaller stencil, placing it in the category of stencils called jishiro, literally "white ground." Woman's wrapper (àdìrẹ ẹlé̩kọ) Yorùbá , unknown maker's mark. Woman's wrapper (àdìrẹ ẹlé̩kọ), 20th century. Commercial cotton cloth, synthetic indigo dye, 68 5/8 × 78 × 1/16 in. (174.3 × 198.1 × 0.1 cm). Àdìrẹ is a Yorùbá textile whose patterns are made through resist dyeing. The àdìrẹ technique used to make this wrapper is àdìrẹ ẹlé̩kọ, wherein female artists paint cassava flour paste on fabric, preventing certain areas from soaking in blue indigo dye. This cloths name is Olókun, identifiable in part by the motif of a circular “stool” surrounded by “leaves.” As goddess of the sea, Olókuns domain is the source of wealth, lending the cloth the associated meaning “life is sweet.” Other àdìrẹ employ tie-and-dye techniques (àdìrẹ oníko), where raffia ties hold small stones or seeds in place to cover areas of the fabric during dyeing, resulting in àdìrẹ eléso patterns. One such àdìrẹ oníko was incorporated underneath a panel in the featured egúngún (see photograph). Arts of Africa 20th c

Sarong, 1800s. Indonesia, Java, North Coast, 19th century. Batik and applied gold, cotton; overall: 276.8 x 113 cm (109 x 44 1/2 in.). This sarong, overlaid with gold leaf (or gold dust), would have been worn for high ceremonial occasions and festivals. The gold has been applied only to the parts of the sarong that would show when draped, and on one side only. The delicate, linear design with Chinese phoenixes, butterflies, and leafy tendrils is one of the characteristic styles of batiks made in cities along the north coast of Java. The "tumpal" (triangle) design of the wide end border (a pan-Southeast Asian motif that commonly occurs on northern Javanese batiks) seems to have symbolized growth and fertility as well as the sacred mountain, Meru.

Textile Design with a Checked Pattern Decorated with Octagons and Squares over a Stippled Background 1840 Anonymous, Alsatian, 19th century Rectangular sheet of paper with a textile design from a group, dated 1840, made in Mulhouse, Alsace, which was an important nineteenth-century center for textile production in the Haut-Rhin region of France. The design is made up of a checked pattern of ribbons of light tan color with a zig-zagging line of dark reddish-brown color running through the middle, over a light tan ground with stipples of dark reddish-brown color. The intersections of the ribbons are decorated alternatingly with octagons and squares. The octagons are colored alternatingly with orange, purple and green, and outlined with red and black.
