Panel with five phoenixes in a garden 18th century China Large pictorial silk tapestries such as this one were mostly woven in the imperial workshops in Suzhou, a textile center in southeast China. The bright yellow background, a color exclusive to the emperor, further confirms its imperial origins. The five phoenixes probably refer to the five species of this auspicious bird in Chinese myths. This piece is paired with another five-phoenix panel in The Met collection, and the set could represent the five ideal relationships (wulun) in Confucianism: between father and son, husband and wife, emperor and official, senior and youth, and among friends.. Date: after 1634.The imagery of this panel is unusual in that it juxtaposes King Charles I and his consort, Henrietta Maria, with Adam and Eve beneath the Tree of Knowledge. To some extent, the panel can be classified with other commonly occurring images of the royal couple in contemporary embroidery. These appear to have been primarily celebratory or commemorative in nature, but the direct association made here between contemporary royalty and Adam and Eve is unique among surviving embroidered pictures, indeed among the images of royalty in every medium. It therefore has significance within the wider field of royal iconography of the Caroline era.The embroidery can be dated to a time after 1634, because the poses of Charles I and Henrietta Maria are derived from an engraving by Robert van Voerst first published in that year. Date: first quarter 17th century.Isfahan, the Safavid capital, and Na'in were the two main centers in which buildings were lavishly decorated with tilework. The old tile-making tradition of composing repetitive geometrical or vegetal patterns was kept alive on mosques and madrasas, but an important innovation on secular buildings was a composition of square tiles individually painted as single elements of an outdoor scene with characters set in a garden landscape. These were placed in royal garden pavilions from the time of Shah 'Abbas to that of Shah Sulayman (the last example being the Hasht Bihisht of 1669). The Museum owns three of these panels, all purchased in 1903 and reported to come from

Embroidered coverlet (Colcha) 1786 Doña Rosa Solís y Menéndez This bedcover was made in 1786 by Rosa Solís y Menéndez, who belonged to a prominent creole family from the Yucatan peninsula. Embroidered in bright-colored silk on a textured cotton ground, its lively imagery celebrates love and marriage. The elegantly dressed couple in the center of the coverlet probably represent Doña Rosa and her Spanish-born husband, Gabriel Milanés, whom she married in 1778. Poster for Delft Salad Oil. This poster was commissioned by the Nederlandsche Oliefabriek, an oil manufacturer in Delft. Two women with wavy hair and billowing draperies occupy most of the composition. One of them is dressing a salad. The women with their emphatic contours draw attention away from the actual advertisement, namely for the salad oil. The poster became an icon and lent Dutch Art Nouveau its nickname, the salad oil style’.

This is an image of the ten-headed demon Ravana and Sita, wife of Rama, in a chariot held in the beak of the bird Jatayu, king of the vultures. When Ravana abducted Sita and carried her off in the flying chariot, Jatayu, a great devotee of Rama, engaged him in aerial battle to rescue her. Unsuccessful, he fell to earth, mortally wounded. It was from Jatayu that Rama found out about his wife. This story is from the epic Ramayana (The Journey of Rama). Here, in the Bengali version of this episode, Jatayu attempts to swallow the chariot in order to kill Ravana, but is forced to vomit it out once he realizes that Sita is on board. Jatayu is portrayed as a hero rather than as a failure.
