French botanist Jean Baptiste François Pierre Bulliard was born around 1742 at Aubepierre-en-Barrois (Haute Marne) and died on 26 September 1793 in Paris. He studied at Angers, and later illustrated and published a number of botanical and mycological works on French flora. De Poolse Muts, c. 1620-30. Balthasar van der Ast (Dutch, 1593/94-1657). Brush and watercolor in red, green, and yellow with white heightening or grey wash on antique laid cream paper; sheet: 30.2 x 19.9 cm (11 7/8 x 7 13/16 in.). Still-life painting began in the Northern Netherlands (present-day Holland) around the turn of the 1600s. Still-life painter Balthasar van der Ast made this precise botanical study of a pink carnation as a reference that he could add later to a painting of an elaborate bouquet of flowers. Van der Ast inscribed the name The Polish Cap,” on the sheet to suggest that the flower came from foreign lands.

The symmetric composition of this bouquet might give it a gloss of artifice from a modern viewpoint, but conforms to the predominant taste that lasted well into the seventeenth century. The difference in scale of some of Hoefnagel's flowers indicates that he used individual flower studies to form his bouquet; a fact that is supported by his reuse of separate motifs in other works. This particular bouquet of flowers is a very intimate work, not just because of its size, but also because of its intended purpose.
