Pedanius Dioscorides (Greek: ed sd; circa 40—90 AD) was a Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist, the author of a 5-volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine and related medicinal substances (a pharmacopeia), that was widely read for well more than a thousand years. A native of Anazarbus, Cilicia, Asia Minor, Dioscorides practiced in Rome at the time of Nero. He was a surgeon with the army of the emperor, so he had the opportunity to travel extensively, seeking medicinal substances (plants and minerals) from all over the Roman and Greek world. This miniature painting is from a 12th century Arabic edition of Disocorides' work. <br/><br/>.

Flowers of a Hundred Worlds (Momoyogusa): Willow and Cherry (Yanagizakura), 1909-10. Kamisaka Sekka (Japanese, 1866-1942). Color woodcuts with gold and silver; sheet: 29.9 x 22.1 cm (11 3/4 x 8 11/16 in.). This print from a set of three woodblock printed albums displays the graphic design prowess of Kamisaka Sekka. The images were first distributed one by one to subscribers to the series but later were reissued in bound form, like this book, for mass consumers. Each print features a vignette taken from nature or Japanese literature. Many of the scenes have a long history in Japan, originating in the 900s or 1000s and having been interpreted by all manner of artists since that time. Sekkas selections hew closely to precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya S?tatsu (c. 1570-c. 1640) and calligrapher Honami K?etsu (1558-1637).

Song of the Siren ca. 1883-84 John La Farge Throughout his career, La Farge used watercolor in preparation for creating stained glass windows and mural compositions and as independent works of art. La Farge moved easily between mediums, often translating his preparatory watercolors into independent compositions for exhibition. Song of the Siren, a mythological composition depicting a shepherd lured by a sirens song, is a replica of an illustration that he had made in the early 1870s, which appeared first as the frontispiece for Abby Sage Richardsons Songs from the Old Dramatists (1873). Song of the Siren displays the artists interest in Japanese design with its compressed, flat composition organized around the sweeping diagonal between earth and water and his technical skill as a watercolorist, evident in the subtle modulation of tones and delicate control in rendering form and shadow..
