Flowers on a Japanese Tray on a Mahogany Table John La Farge (American, 1835-1910). Flowers on a Japanese Tray on a Mahogany Table, 1879. Oil on panel, 10 3/8 x 18 1/16 in. (26.3 x 45.8 cm). John La Farge labored over this small painting. He began by making an elaborate, careful drawing on the prepared panel using pen or pencil. The drawn lines describe the outlines of the forms and their essential details. The paint was gradually applied in layers ranging from thick, textured strokes to thin, translucent glazes. La Farge made several changes to the composition as he worked, including painting out a large flower left of center. American Art 1879

The White Roses Anna S. Fisher (American, 1873-1942). The White Roses, before 1922. Opaque watercolor, graphite, touches of pastel, and touches of transparent watercolor on cream, moderately thick, slightly textured wove paper mounted to wood pulp paperboard, 24 15/16 x 19 in. (63.3 x 48.3 cm). With its combination of naturalistically painted flowers and Asian objects, this stunning watercolor recalls the still lifes of John La Farge, and demonstrates Western artists enduring fascination with art of the Far East into the twentieth century. Like La Farge, who was one of the earliest and most influential proponents of Japonisme in America, Anna Fisher sets up engaging contrasts between natural and artificial, ephemeral and enduring, and local and exotic. Pink Azalea--Chinese Vase. Artist: William Merritt Chase (American, Williamsburg, Indiana 1849-1916 New York). Dimensions: 23 1/2 x 16 9/16 in. (59.7 x 42.1 cm). Date: 1880-90 ().Although Chase executed about 120 still life paintings, only ten were based on flowers. However, vases of flowers occasionally appear in his interior scenes and in his portraits. In this canvas an azalea shrub is depicted in a Chinese export porcelain vase, which is presumably used as a planter. Chase was an avid collector of bric-à-brac, including Asian artifacts. The asymmetrical composition of this painting hints at another important aspect of Chase's orientalism: his willingness to emulate some of the basic design principles of Far Eastern art. Flowers was painted by Jean-Honore Fragonard and is part of the Wallace Collection in London. Fragonard (1732-1806)was a French painter of the rococo age and was popular in the courts of Louis XV and Louis XVI for his delicately colored scenes of romance. With the advent of the French Revolution, he could not adhust to the new neo-classical style and was financially ruined.

Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase. Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, Zundert 1853-1890 Auvers-sur-Oise). Dimensions: 25 5/8 x 21 1/4 in. (65.1 x 54 cm). Date: 1890.This still life is not mentioned in Van Gogh's letters and has puzzled scholars as to its place in his artistic production. The subject enjoys a certain rapport with the mixed bouquets of summer flowers he made in Paris; the quasi-abstract floral wallpaper design in the Berceuse of Arles (1996.435), and the white porcelain vase in the Irises of Saint-Rémy (58.187). However, the palette and style of this painting, especially its distinctive blues and ochers and graphic, brick-shape hatchings, link it firmly with the landscapes made just prior to his death in Auvers on July 29, 1890. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Still Life with Apples and Pears ca. 1891-92 Paul Cézanne French Cézanne once proclaimed, "With an apple I want to astonish Paris," and he succeeded, even in his most deceptively simple still lifes, to dazzle and delight. Turning to the Provençal apples and Beurré Diel pears grown in the vicinity of the familys estate near Aix, he dispensed with traditional one-point perspective and examined the fruit, plates, and table from various viewpoints—straight on, above, and sideways. Still Life with a Vase of Flowers, Melon, Peaches, and Grapes Charlotte Eustache Sophie de Fuligny Damas, marquise de Grollier French 1780 The marquise de Grollier was a highly accomplished amateur painter, a term that in eighteenth-century France implied an elevated social class rather than a lack of seriousness or skill. Unlike the periods most celebrated still-life painter, Anne Vallayer-Coster, Grollier did not exhibit or sell her art; however, she was at the center of a rich artistic network, counting among her friends Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, Hubert Robert, and the sculptor Antonio Canova, who called her the "Raphael of flower painting." As part of her training, Grollier meticulously copied works by her teacher, the fashionable Dutch émigré painter Gérard van Spaendonck, including this painting, which she signed "Marquise de Grollier, student of Van Spaendonck." Irises 1890 Vincent van Gogh Dutch In May 1890, just before he checked himself out of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted four exuberant bouquets of spring flowers, the only still lifes of any ambition he had undertaken during his yearlong stay: two of irises, two of roses, in contrasting color schemes and formats. In the Museums Irises he sought a “harmonious and soft” effect by placing the “violet” flowers against a “pink background,” which have since faded owing to his use of fugitive red pigments. Another work from this series, Roses (1993.400.5), hangs in the adjacent gallery. Both were owned by the artists mother until her death in 1907. Buy a print Custom framed to suit your space.
