Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase. Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os (Dutch, 1782 - 1861)Still Life: Flowers and Fruit. Artist: Severin Roesen (American (born Prussia), Boppard-am-Rhein 1816-72). Dimensions: 40 x 50 3/8 in. (101.6 x 128 cm). Date: 1850-55.This exceptionally large still life represents Roesen at his best. It is undated but was probably painted between 1850 and 1855, when the artist was living in New York. The elaborate and crowded composition is characteristic, as are the brilliant color, technical virtuosity, and meticulous attention to detail expected of someone who was trained as a porcelain painter. The picture is a fine example of the excess that underlies much of Victorian design. Fantin worked on these canvases from March through September 1866, exhibiting one of them at the Paris Salon the same year (now National Gallery of Art, Washington). Among Fantins first major achievements as a still life painter, the present work reflects his aspiration to create serious and complex compositions in a realist style inspired by Chardin and Courbet.. Woodside Woodside probably received his training from Philadelphia sign painter Matthew Pratt or one of Pratts business partners. In 1805, Woodside opened his own studio in Philadelphia, advertising his services as an ornamental or sign painter. He aspired to less mundane genres, however, and tried his hand at emblematic and patriotic works, animal scenes, miniatures, and copies after English engravings. This work and its companion, "Still Life: Peaches and Grapes" (41.152.1), are among Woodsides few known still lifes and represent his best efforts as a painter. His arrangement of the fruit in a spare setting bears the stylistic imprint of the Peale family, who established a still-life tradition in Philadelphia in the early nineteenth century..
