Peacock and Dragon , 1878. William Morris (British, 1834-1896). Weft-faced compound twill; wool; overall: 206.6 x 174.7 cm (81 5/16 x 68 3/4 in.). Morris sought to produce textiles that could function as he imagined medieval wall hangings had, bringing warmth to stone-cold rooms. Boldly designed with soothing colors in thick wool, Peacock and Dragon is the closest Morris came to achieving this ideal. In the same year he designed this textile, Morris visited the shop of the London dealer Vincent Robinson, where he saw a room re-created from Damascus, all vermillion and gold and ultramarine, very beautiful, and is just like going into the Arabian nights.” It partly inspired the exotic motifs seen here. This design was one of the most popular among Morris’s customers; it was available in five colorways.

Velvet Panel with Flowering Plants first half 17th century During the seventeenth century, rows of flowering plants became fashionable designs for textiles in Iran, India, and Turkey. In this example, the plants are fantastic conglomerations of blossoms growing out of pools of coiled waves. The serrated edges of the leaves may show the influence of the so-called saz style popular in Turkey at the same time. Safavid weavers of this period were particularly adept at obscuring the junctions where pattern-repeat units meet, creating the sense of a continuous composition. Velvet with Figural Imagery mid-16th century Textiles of the Safavid period demonstrate the technical mastery of the weavers as well as their strong dependence upon book illustration and illumination as a pattern source, at least in the products of court workshops. This example features a lattice pattern formed by staggered rows of lobed medallions. The princely pastime of falconry is the subject of the medallion scenes: the bird sits on her master's gloved hand while an attendant, holding a receptacle and a bag for the game, approaches. Predote cloth or church crooked from dick side with candidalable motif. Forecast for an altar or a kerkvane of natural colosside: old clamp side with braid side. Standing rectangular model. The symmetrical pattern consists of a candlemenaboleter in the center from which voluntarges waves with branches. The motifs are made in linen stroke with openwork edges and large recesses. The motifs are connected by a picoted braid soil. Ornamental grounds are applied in leaves and flower hearts. At the top, the side is finished with a woven linen band, the other sides are finished with a straight trens with picots.

Part of a Hanging or Curtain ca. 1600 A substantial body of textiles, of which some have only recently come to light, can be tentatively assigned to one of the imperial workshops established by the Mughal emperor Akbar (r. 1550-1605) during the late sixteenth century. Length of cotton first quarter 18th century Indian, Coromandel Coast, for export market In the eighteenth century European silk designs spawned imitations and interpretations in India and China. This example, an Indian chintz, and a Chinese woven silk in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (no. 2009.4628), are among a relatively small group of Eastern textiles that were based on European bizarre silks of the early eighteenth century (for another example of European-style silks woven in China, see MMA 19.93.111).. As a group, bizarre silks present a melange of motifs from around the globe. The two textiles shown here allude to designs that depict fantastic flora together with a striped or columnar background -- elements that appeared in European silks periodically from the late seventeenth century to about 1720. Chasuble, 1700s. Italy or Spain, 18th century. Embroidery; silk and metallic threads; overall: 113.6 x 75.7 cm (44 3/4 x 29 13/16 in.). The chasubles exquisite symmetrical decoration highlights its central panel where three illusionary gold containers hold skillfully shaded fruit in pastel silk tones. Delicately curving motifs enhance the side panels along with finely stitched strawberries in so-called French knots. This liturgical chasuble and other vestments, worn over a white alb with lace, were embroidered by professional specialists, such as experts who shaded colored silks or secured gold thread, in early versions of assembly lines that were usually in secular workrooms or in convents. The church or commissioner supplied the raw materials and paid a fee for the work.

Damn with animals, a private garden and a source of life, anonymous, c. 1500 - c. 1525 Wall carpet, large -leaved concealed with the Hortus conclusus and the source of life in a fenced garden. A blue -black stock is covered with high -growing flowering plants, between which wild and myth animals. The slightly rolled leaves are large and varied: lobed or sharp and deeply incised, thistle -shaped or acanthus species. The fairly small flowers grow in bunches. The animals include a griffin and wolf, also a fox, das, eagle and a hawk, who attacks a rabbit. In the hills built with houses. In the center is a hexagonal fountain built up in floors, with columns, which forms a bingwood crowned by French lily above a middle column. Everything is yellow and red.
