Most likely a preliminary study for a never-realized history painting, Benjamin Wests wash drawing presents an allegorical vision of Londons Royal Academy of Arts, a professional artists organization founded in 1768, as a gathering of learned men from different epochs. Some figures wear classical togas, while others don contemporary wigs and robes. Additional references to enlightenment—including the bright spotlight in the compositions center and the bust of Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, in the background—symbolize the noble endeavors of the institution and its commitment to the classical tradition. In these two paintings, Abigail Pickman and Elizabeth Goldthwaite sat for their marriage portraits. As was typical of upper-class white women in the colonial United States, they likely did not control how they were represented in these images, which were intended to project the familys stability and wealth. Before the American Revolution, the Boston painter John Singleton Copley was the most sought-after artist in the country. Copleys portraits, highly regarded for their skillful rendering of luxurious items such as silks and pearls, were synonymous with the tastes of the eighteenth-century social elite, both in the United States and England. Woman in Manteau Robert Henri (American, 1865-1929). Woman in Manteau, 1898. Oil on canvas, 58 1/16 x 38 11/16 in. (147.5 x 98.3 cm). Painted in Paris at a time when Robert Henri was determined to make his professional mark as a young artist, this workin a dark, smoky palette deliberately recalling European Old Mastersfeatures his favorite model, Berthe Terrier. Although he intentionally allied his art with revered tradition, Henri also added a contemporary mood by portraying Terrier with a bold, almost defiant expression. X-radiographs reveal that Henri repainted this work extensively as he struggled to capture his model’s anatomy. At an earlier stage (see illustration), the placement of the shawl exposed much more of her shoulders and bust. Such focus on the nude reflects the artist’s early academic training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where Thomas Eakins’s Realist tradition was still strongly felt. American Art 1898

This scene is one of several designs that the English sculptor and draughtsman John Flaxman (1755-1826) did to illustrate passages from the Greek epic poet Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, a commission he had been given by Georgiana Hare-Naylor while he was living in Rome. It represents Polydamus advising Hector to retire from trenches. It was done 1793.

Eva Braun's Photo Albums, ca. 1913 - ca. 1944. These albums are attributed to Eva Braun (four are claimed by her friend Herta Schneider, nee Ostermeyer) and document her life from ca. 1913 to 1944. There are many photographs of Eva, her sisters and their children, Herta Schneider and her children, as well as photographs of Eva's vacations, family members and friends. Included also are photographs taken by and of Eva Braun at Hitler's chalet Berghof (or Kehlstein), photographs of Hitler and his entourage, visitors to Berghof and the scenery around Berchtesgaden, and some studio portraits of Eva and members of her family.

White Ships John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). White Ships, 1908. Translucent and touches of opaque watercolor and wax resist with graphite underdrawing, 13 7/8 x 19 3/8 in. (35.2 x 49.2 cm). In this work, one of the latest of the watercolors in the 1909 purchase, Sargent used a small amount of clear wax on the right side of the larger boat in order to repel the blue washes and create highlights. This is the only watercolor in the collection from the 1909 purchase in which wax resist is found. Sargents use of this technique later increased significantly; most of Bostons watercolors purchased in 1912 contain wax. American Art 1908

When the Mughal emperors conquered northern India, they brought with them a taste for Persian aesthetics. Early in their reign, the Mughals brought Persian artists from Iran to teach painting techniques and styles to artists in India. The product of this bicultural painting workshop looks very different from both Persian and indigenous Indian painting, in part because the artists were looking at European art as well. This is a folio from the oversized manuscript known as the Qissa-i Amir Hamza, or Hamza-Nama, one of the most ambitious projects completed by the imperial painting workshop under the Mughal emperor Akbar (reigned 1556-1605). Lydia Field Emmet William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916). Lydia Field Emmet, 1892. Oil on canvas, 72 x 36 1/8 in. (182.9 x 91.8 cm). One of the most striking portraits by the leading New York painted William Merritt Chase, this dramatic likeness of his talented student and later the successful portait painter Lydia Field Emmet (1866-1952) was an homage to the portraitists he most admired: the Spanish Baroque master Diego Velázquez and the nineteenth-century painters James McNeil Whistler and Edouard Manet. Drawing particularly on the vigorous painterly realism of Veláquez, Chase structured the likeness with strikingly opposed areas of light and dark, and employed such brilliant passages of the painterly freedom as the trailing pink bow of the "Van Dyckian" Baroque-inspired gown. Lydia Emmet's direct gaze and bold pose, with her elbow assertively aimed at the the viewer, speak to her spirit of independence, at the time she was preparing a mural entitled Art, Science, and Literatur
