Sasanian Written sources state that in 540, the Sasanian emperor Khusraw I (r. 531-79) decorated his palace at Ctesiphon with mosaics commemorating the Sasanian army's siege of the Byzantine city of Antioch. Excavations at the site uncovered fragments of mosaics with vibrant colors and gilding in the palace precinct. The use of a medium associated with Byzantine imperial architecture at the Sasanian capital is an example of the complex cultural and political exchanges made between the two empires.. New Kingdom The burial the House Mistress Ruiu was found in the tomb of her father, Neferkhawet, which was excavated by the Museums Egyptian Expedition in 1935. On the left hand of Ruiu's mummy were three scarab rings. The scarabs were made of glazed steatite and the ring bands were silver. The scarabs had been mounted by passing a silver wire through a hole running from head to tail. The wire was then lashed to the ring with finer silver wire. Silver deteriorates over time when exposed to dampness, and the rings were badly corroded. The scarabs were all originally glazed blue, but the glaze has almost entirely disappeared from wear and from the damp conditions inside the tomb. This scarab is inscribed on the base with a striding sphinx facing a rearing cobra. This design is typical of scarabs dating to the Hyksos period, a century or so before Ruiu's death, sometime in the sole reign of Thutmose III. Date: ca. 1st-3rd century A.D..The fragment has been shown by scientific analysis and examination to be ancient. It is probably part of a bowl or globular bottle that was decorated with linear engraving in antiquity. However, the inscription and floral decoration appear to be modern additions. The inscription is copied from a Roman marble cinerary urn that has been known since 1716 and been in the British Museum since 1804. The decoration was therefore added to the fragment in order to enhance its attractiveness and value probably in the 19th century by an astute, well-informed, but unscrupulous person.
