CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -The cars on the NASA Railroad are separated for different destinations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. They carry Ares I-X segments. One of the cars is going to the Rotation, Processing and Surge Facility. The four reusable motor segments and the nozzle exit cone, manufactured by the Ares I first-stage prime contractor Alliant Techsystems Inc., or ATK, departed Utah March 12 on the seven-day, cross-country trip to Florida. The segments will be delivered to Kennedy's Rotation, Processing and Surge Facility for final processing and integration. The booster used for the Ares I-X launch is being modified by adding new forward structures and a fifth segment simulator. The motor is the final hardware needed for the rocket's upcoming test flight this summer. The stacking operations are scheduled to begin in the Vehicle Assembly Building in April.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A segment of a solid rocket booster from the STS-122 mission is loaded on the NASA Railroad at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. After a mission, the spent boosters are recovered, cleaned, disassembled, refurbished and reused after each launch. After hydrolasing the interior of each segment, they are placed on flatbed trucks. The individual booster segments are transferred to a railhead located at the railroad yard. The covered segments will be moved to Titusville for interchange with Florida East Coast Railway to begin the trip back to the Thiokol plant in Wa¬satch, Utah.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Three NASA railroad locomotives at Kennedy Space Center in Florida move toward Launch Complex 39 area's Rotation, Processing and Surge Facility, or RPSF. The operation was to allow wheel and axle assemblies to be swapped between two of the locomotives. The RPSF was built to support work on the solid rocket used motors during the space shuttle era. The facility had never previously been used for another purpose, but is now free to serve other customers. With rails running into the building's high bay and a pair of heavy-lift cranes positioned overhead, the facility's capabilities were a perfect fit for the NASA Railroad's needs. Railroad managers wanted to trade the wheel and axle assemblies, or trucks, of locomotives No. 2 and No. 3. Locomotive No. 3 was painstakingly restored in recent years by the NASA Railroad team, and handles much of the rail work required at the center in the post-shuttle era. But the trucks on locomotive No. 2 are in better shape and are mo

The train carrying the two solid rocket boosters that will power NASAs Space Launch System (SLS) for Artemis missions to the Moon arrives at the Jay Jay rail yard - the connecting link between Kennedy Space Center and the Florida East Coast railway - in Titusville, Florida, on June 12, 2020. The boosters, each comprised of five motor segments, traveled from a Northrop Grumman manufacturing facility in Promontory, Utah, to Kennedys Rotation, Processing and Surge Facility, where teams with NASAs Exploration Ground Systems will process the segments before moving them to the Vehicle Assembly Building for stacking on the mobile launcher. Under the Artemis program, NASA will land the first woman and the next man on the Moon by 2024. The first in a series of increasingly complex missions, Artemis I will test the Orion spacecraft and SLS as an integrated system ahead of crewed flights to the Moon.

A U.S. Army locomotive used as part of rail operations is shown Nov. 18, 2022, at Fort McCoy, Wis. For the many decades of Fort McCoys existence, the capability to transport cargo and equipment to and from the installation by rail has always been there. During World War II, for example, the railroad at Fort McCoy was one of the main forms of transportation for bringing troops in for training and home after the war as well as moving cargo and equipment in and out of the installation. And as rail operations continue in the future at the installation, Douglas Terry Altman with the Fort McCoy Logistics Readiness Center that manages Fort McCoy rail operations said he welcomes each opportunity to demonstrate the capability. He said rail is one of the post's strategic transportation missions, and regular rail movements allow the installation to exercise that capability.
