The Temptation of Christ by the Devil. Culture: Spanish. Dimensions: 69 1/2 in. × 9 ft. 10 in. (176.5 × 299.7 cm). Date: first half 12th century (possibly 1129-34).The hermitage of San Baudelio de Berlanga was constructed in the beginning of the eleventh century at the heart of the frontier between Islamic and Christian lands. One hundred fifty years later, its extraordinary palm-vaulted interior was transformed with the addition of two cycles of vibrant paintings: an extensive Christological cycle at the top and scenes of hunting and animals at the bottom, derived from Islamic art. The large figures of the biblical cycle, the clear outlines, and the radiant colors ensured that the story would be legible from the floor. The fresco conflates three episodes from Christ's Temptation. At the left, the Devil dares Christ to turn stones into bread. The Healing of the Blind Man and the Raising of Lazarus Spanish first half 12th century (possibly 1129-34) This painting depicts two miracles from Jesuss adult life and ministry. Under an architectural canopy at left, Jesus heals a blind man by touching the mans closed eyes with two fingers of his right handa traditional Christian gesture of blessing. At right, Jesus brings Lazarus back to life. Accompanied by Saint John the Evangelist, Jesus gestures with an open left hand while pointing a cross-shaped staff in his right at the tightly shrouded Lazarus, who rises from his sarcophagus as his sisters, Mary and Martha, lift the lid. Sparely told, both stories are meant to emphasize human connection and evoke deep emotion (Mary and Marthas faces are stained with tears). Although the two episodes do not occur sequentially in the Gospel of John, they may have been placed side by side here because they both communicate themes of rebirth and redemption.In the 1920s, restorers removed most of
