Actors portraying Harlequin in the eighteenth century, as well as the porcelain figures depicting him, are invariably dressed in a jacket and trousers composed of large, brightly colored lozenges. The early, painted representations of theatrical Harlequins depict him in a costume made with irregular, variously colored patches to indicate his poverty,[1 and this manner of dress would evolve into the distinctive, multicolored lozenge outfit with which Harlequin continues to be associated. The specific coloring employed by Meissen for Harlequin figures varied enormously; often the palette used for the jacket was different from that used for the trousers (see 1974.356.355 and 64.101.77), and his costume was frequently divided in two with different colors or patterns applied for the left and right sides of the02 12 2024, Germany, NRW, Advent, Christmas, Decoration, Christmas Pyramid with Figures at the Christmas Market in Bochum, Maria, Germany: XD.XKERLEKIN/SNOWFELDXPHOTOGYX SF021224MARIADPinocchio sitting on wood on canvas backgroundDoll from England, 1925-1992New Year´s imageSmurfWheelbarrow with colored easter eggs and ceramic easter bunnyA stock photograph of a set of Russian Dolls.Doll from Channel Islands,Two miners ca. 1757-58 Fürstenberg Porcelain Manufactory. (6.99 x 3.02 x 1.27 cm), Ivory, pigment, string, Canada, 19th century, The Inuit who live in Labrador, off the eastern coast of Canada, created this group of ivories shown here in the late nineteenth century. Although their exact purpose is not known, they were probably made for trade with the Europeans. Rooted in the carving tradition of their ancestors, the Inuit of Labrador created these wonderfully charming objects that reflected their daily lives. A family of Inuit dressed in semi-traditional clothing is shown surrounded by their hunting implements, including a dog sled and a kayak. The artist who created these also accurately represented the animals they hunted; caribou, seal, and birds. Despite the changes in their culture and lifestyle over the past 500 years, the Inuit have continued the art of ivory carving, whether it is for the market or ceremonial purposes.
