CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, STS-135 Pilot Doug Hurley and Mission Specialist Sandra Magnus (in the red helmet) prepare for departure in a T-38 training jet. The astronauts, along with Commander Chris Ferguson, were at the center for the traditional post-flight crew return presentation. To the left of the jet is the space shuttle's mate-demate device.STS-135 Mission Specialist Rex Walheim was unable to attend the Kennedy event. In July 2011, Atlantis and its crew delivered to the International Space Station the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module packed with more than 9,400 pounds of spare parts, equipment and supplies that will sustain station operations for the next year. STS-135 was the 33rd and final flight for Atlantis and the final mission of the Space Shuttle Program.

The Greek navy patrol boat HS Ipoploiarhos Troupakis (P-23) escorts Daedalus 88, a human-powered pedal plane, as it flies over the Aegean on its 74-mile trip between Crete and Santorini. The plane was built by students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is being piloted by Greek national cycling champion Kanellos Kanellopolous. The flight was patterned after the Greek myth of Daedalus and his son, Icarus, who attempted to leave Crete by constructing wings with which to fly. Country: Aegean Sea

NASAs X-57 Maxwell, the agencys first all-electric X-plane and first crewed X-planed in two decades, is delivered to NASAs Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California in its Mod II configuration. The first of three primary modifications for the project, Mod II involves testing of the aircrafts cruise electric propulsion system. Delivery to NASA from prime contractor Empirical Systems Aerospace of San Luis Obispo, California, marks a major milestone for the project, at which point the vehicle is reintegrated for ground tests, to be followed by taxi tests, and eventually, flight tests. X-57s goal is to further advance the design and airworthiness process for distributed electric propulsion technology for general aviation aircraft, which can provide multiple benefits to efficiency, emissions, and noise.

The solar-powered Helios Prototype flying wing frames two modified F-15 research aircraft in a hangar at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, California. The elongated 247-foot span lightweight aircraft, resting on its ground maneuvering dolly, stretched almost the full length of the 300-foot long hangar while on display during a visit of NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe and other NASA officials on Jan. 31, 2002. The unique solar-electric flying wing reached an altitude of 96,863 feet during an almost 17-hour flight near Hawaii on Aug. 13, 2001, a world record for sustained horizontal flight by a non-rocket powered aircraft. Developed by AeroVironment, Inc., under NASA's Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology (ERAST) project, the Helios Prototype is the forerunner of a planned fleet of slow-flying, long duration, high-altitude uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAV) which can serve as "atmospheric satellites," performing Earth science missions or functioning as teleco
