This one takes place usually in aristocratic estate landscaped to accommodate the festivities. The artist adds a moralizing symbol with the chained monkey: it stands for sinful man, who allows himself to be fettered by his base instincts (BSLOC_2016_3_120)The Fortune-Teller. Date: probably 1630s.While an old gypsy crone tells his fortune, a naive youth is robbed by her accomplices, a subject popular among Caravaggesque painters throughout Europe in the seventeenth century. La Tour's painting can be interpreted as a genre or theatrical scene, or as an allusion to the parable of the prodigal son. The mid-17th century saw revived interest in representations of the lower classes. Artists like the Le Nain brothers in France painted scenes that looked back to the Renaissance tradition of pastoral imagery. The Le Nain often depicted ordinary country folk going about their daily business, subjects and figures they remembered from their childhood in rural Laon. Considered a companion piece to Peasant Children Dancing (1958.175.2), Vintage Scene has also been attributed to the Master of the Béguins, a Flemish artist who worked in the manner of the Le Nain in Paris. The Dutch proudly displayed such expensive status symbols in their homes, the exotic food and material possessions reminding them of the good things in life, even as the watch reminds them of their transience.
