A man of affairs, Burgomaster Hasselaar sits with quill in hand before a book and globe, both illuminated by soft light from the left. With a row of valuable leather-bound books on the shelf behind her, his wife, dressed in a costly millstone ruff, stands nearby with her hand on an overturned lute, an instrument symbolizing marital harmony. In the background, a well-known subject by Dou of a cave-dwelling hermit at prayer hangs on the wall, probably as a reminder that the couples material concerns—business and possessions—must be balanced by spiritual ones. The New Bonnet 1858 Francis William Edmonds American This work, the last the artist exhibited at the National Academy of Design, exemplifies his gently moralizing approach to genre painting. In a setting influenced by the established formulas of seventeenth-century Dutch masters, Edmonds contrasts the daughter's extravagant purchase with the faults of her disapproving parents. The father's bottle and glass and the mother's mirror imply indulgence in drink and vanity, respectively. The poor delivery girl serves as an added moral gibe to the comfortable middle-class family. The elderly man in this painting may depict or be based on Edmonds's brother, Judge John Worth Edmonds. The view through the door may represent Irving Place, where the judge lived until his death in 1872. The figure of the woman standing beside the old man is almost identical to a figure appearing in a number of works by Edmonds and may have been based on his mother. Guardroom with the Deliverance of Saint Peter ca. 1645-47 David Teniers the Younger Flemish Flemish painters had a long tradition of relegating religious narratives to the background of scenes drawn from contemporary life. Here, the viewer can just glimpse Saint Peters liberation from captivity by an angel at the rear of a scene of military life. In the foreground, soldiers play dice and a heap of armor and earthenware conveys Tenierss skillful illusionism. In this way, the painting enacts the wordly distractions that can cause believers to lose sight of higher things.. Guardroom with the Deliverance of Saint Peter. The Smokers ca. 1636 Adriaen Brouwer Flemish Despite his early death, Brouwers talent and flair for human comedy earned him the esteem of fellow artists, and he had a lasting influence on genre painting. In this famous picture, Brouwer himself (center foreground) plays one of his typical revelers, seemingly surprised by the viewers intrusion on the scene. In addition to his comic genius, Brouwer masterfully displays a range of ephemeral effects, ranging from curling smoke to grimaces. The Experts 1837 Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps French In this satirical work, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1839, elegantly dressed "experts" examine a landscape in the style of the seventeenth-century painter Nicolas Poussin. Decamps's generation, including such figures as Théodore Rousseau and Jules Dupré, sought to challenge the prevailing view that the art of the past should dictate contemporary taste.Scenes in which monkeys are engaged in human activitiessingeries in Frenchare part of a tradition that can be traced to Antiquity.. (63.5 x 55.88 cm) (outer frame), Oil on canvas, France, 18th century, The crumpled envelope cast to the floor indicates the eagerness with which this woman opened the letter she grasps in one hand. Her attention, however, is now turned to the miniature (small portrait) she holds in the other. Before the invention of photography, miniatures kept lovers close to one anothers hearts. But who is courting this woman' Their identity hidden from us, we can only speculate. The music book on the harpsicord and the elegant interior indicate that the woman in the painting is a member of the fashionable Parisian elite. With powdered hair and a ruffled apron covering her dress, she is likely the head of her household. But her slight smile, arched eyebrows, and sidelong gaze—as well as the older servants interest—suggests intrigue. Is the subject her husband, or perhaps a new suitor' A

This painting, titled Grace before Meat, was done by the Dutch Golden age painter Jan Steen (1626-1679). Steen combined a genius for painting with jovial habits which were not marked by moderation. In spite of this, he produced a large number of pictures, showing incidents of the everyday life with which he was acquainted. His general note is one of humor, and rarely does he discard it for the quiet harmony of domestic scenes which gives an added interest to such pictures as Grace Before Meat.

The Visit to the Nursery. Artist: Gabriël Metsu (Dutch, Leiden 1629-1667 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 30 1/2 x 32 in. (77.5 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1661.In an impressively appointed room, modeled on a large chamber in the new Town Hall of Amsterdam, the parents of a newborn baby receive a fashionable well-wisher. Such a kraambezoek (cradle visit) was a minor ritual of polite society. At least two of the poses recall figures by one of Holland's closest observers of modern manners, Gerard ter Borch. The painting was celebrated in its own time--for example, in a poem by Jan Vos of 1662--but unfortunately its surface is badly worn from cleanings in the past. (102.87 x 130.81 cm) (outer frame), Oil on canvas, Netherlands, 17th century, Pieter de Hoochs clients preferred contemporary domestic scenes, which expressed the values of an increasingly prosperous Dutch middle class. In this picture, the familys wealth is reflected in several details. The mistress of the house, outfitted in fine fabrics and baroque pearls, welcomes a shopkeeper delivering fresh white asparagus—always a delicacy. She turns to speak to her husband, dressed in a rich red kimono—visual evidence of the Dutch East India Trading Companys access to Japanese culture.
