In this self-portrait, Eastman Johnson labors over a desk in a warmly lit room, most likely his Manhattan studio on Washington Square. The paintings dark palette and quiet mood recall seventeenth-century Dutch genre paintings, whose style Johnson absorbed while studying at The Hague in the Netherlands. Some of the small framed paintings in the background were probably acquired during the artists time abroad, and the canvas itself is an artifact from that period of his life: x-radiographs reveal that Johnson painted this work over a copy of a Dutch portrait. The Baker's Cart 1656 Jean Michelin French Peasants and popular life in rural settings were common subjects in seventeenth-century painting, though Michelin situates his figureswhich include a baker and his cart, an old woman offering medicinal eau-de-vie, and a boy with a basketin an urban context. Little is known about Michelin, whose subjects relate to the more famous brothers Le Nain, but this painting has served as a fixed point in defining his oeuvre since his signature and a date were discovered during a cleaning of this canvas in the late 1920s.. The Coppersmith ca. 1898 Edgar Melville Ward The Ohio-born Ward studied at the National Academy of Design in New York from 1865 to 1870 and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1872 to 1878. A consummate academic, he began teaching at the National Academy in 1882 and directed the school from 1889 to 1909. His paintings, which often depict tradesmen and craftsmen, demonstrate his meticulous academic style. "The Coppersmith" reflects late nineteenth-century nostalgia for the past and for beautiful handicrafts in an increasingly industrialized age.
