Tile with Niche Design. Calligrapher: Nusrat al-Din Muhammad. Dimensions: H. 15 1/2 in. (39.4 cm)W. 11 1/4 in. (28.6 cm)D. 1 3/8 in. (3.5 cm). Date: dated A.H. 860/A.D. 1455-56.Arabic Inscription: "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. The building of this structure was ordered by the supreme Sultan Abu Anbiyya al-Muzaffar Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan, May God perpetuate his kingdom. Nusrat al-Din Muhammad wrote this in the year 860/1455-56." Along with two calligraphic frieze tiles in London's Victoria and Albert Museum displaying similar floral designs, this luster tile once adorned an as-yet-unidentified building commissioned by Abu Sa'id (1424-69), great-grandson of Timur. From the inscription on this small tile, we learn not only the name of the patron, and the date of the building's construction, but also the name of the tile's calligrapher--Nusrat al-Din Muhammad. Tile Panel in the form of an Architectural Niche. Dimensions: H. 48 1/2 in. (123.2 cm)W. 23 1/2 in. (59.7 cm). Maker: Hasan ibn `Ali ibn Ahmad Babavaih. Date: first half 14th century.Scholars have proposed that this large three-piece <i>mihrab</i>-shaped panel once adorned the tomb of the Sufi shaikh 'Abd al-Samad in Natanz. In addition to its selection of Qur'anic verses, the panel includes an inscription describing itself as the work of Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Ahmad Babavaih, a known fourteenth-century tilemaker from Kashan. Indicative of the collaborative nature of this type of work, this piece also contains the signature of the calligrapher who wrote the inscription - 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Fadl Allah. "Music" ca. 1685-97 Savonnerie Manufactory This carpet, representing Music, belongs to a series of ninety-three originally intended for (but never used in) the Grande Galerie of the Louvre (then a palace). Each tile has a six-pointed floral medallion at its center, from which a network of small saz leaves, lotus blossoms, and split-palmette (rumi) leaves emanates.
