Decoration of basilica drastically altered over centuries, until 1858 when restored to original aspect. Restoration lasted until 1890. Exterior views of architecture and architectural sculpture, some of which contains re-used Roman fragments and architectural elements. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

In the 17th century, the State came to be an important commissioner of public funerary monuments for nationalheroes’. Grand tombs were ordered especially after 1650, when various naval battles were fought against theEnglish. Rombout Verhulst was the leading specialist in funerary monuments. He also made the tomb forLieutenant-Admiral Maerten Tromp (1598-1653) in Delft, for which this terracotta is a design.

The flat top is attached to the base with nails. Slats have been made along the sides, creating casements. The cassettes on the front contains the text in a gold-plated font: "So peace serves great trump that spangiens Gansche power // in ten years gherust in Duyns in Duyns brought // and Schev'lingh Sagh continue the British fleet of nursing // Tnut Los Syne Doot But And Dach Verset ". The wooden plate with text at the casement is older than the actual base. The plinth contains several ridges. The base is cave, but has a shelf on the bottom. The underside contains many screws.
