The portal sculpture is comprised of elaborately carved colonettes; the subjects include nude men in foliage, prophets, saints, martyrs, patriarchs, inhabited vinescroll, grapevines, fig leaves, Abraham and Isaac, and a scene of the stigmatization of St. Francis.. This church was built in the middle of the 11th century, with additions in the 13th-14th centuries, and alterations to the interior in the 17th century. A flight of steps leads up to a porticoed porch, above which rises the campanile. The interior of the church is vaulted with groin vaults, now decorated with coffers and stucco decoration. Near the altar are placed the Paschal candelabrum (1264) and the pulpit (1260), both decorated with multi-colored mosaics. The pulpit, in addition, has marble bas reliefs along the sides of the stairs depicting Jonah being swallowed by the whale, and on the other side, a lion swallowing a man. Sculpture. On the entrance wall is a curious scene of the Last Judgment: Christ in a mandorla sits enthroned among various saints, music-making angels, Virgins and Patriarchs; three saints kneel below him, one in bishops' robes and two in Capuchin habit; instruments of the Passion lay on a table. This is an illustration from the Bhagavata Purana, a lengthy Hindu scripture dedicated to the god Krishna, who is said to have lived on earth as a prince. It depicts an episode from Krishnas youth, much of which was spent in hiding in the cowherding community of Vrindavan. Eventually he had to leave this idyllic rural setting and return to his familys kingdom at Mathura, where his evil uncle was ruling unjustly. Krishna (with blue skin) is shown here at the far right with his brother, Balarama (with white skin), riding an oxcart on their way to Mathura. The town of Pomata, situated above Lake Titicaca in the highlands of Peru, was once a popular Christian pilgrimage shrine. In this painting, Our Lady of Pomata is depicted as a statue--a carved figure crowned and dressed in lavish garments and adorned with precious materials--that stood on the side altar of the parish church. This type of iconic image, found throughout Latin America, is known as a statue painting. A rosary encircles the hands of the Virgin, who holds a tiny doll-like Child Jesus, also crowned and finely dressed. Pearls were among the sensational finds of the Spanish in the New World, and swags of them, caught with huge rosettes, adorn the figure. This church was started in 1581 and has been attributed to Vignola or Rainaldi. In the center of the main altar is a depiction of the Madonna of Peace, a fresco of the Viterbese school, dating to the 15th century. To each side of this central fresco are frescoes of S. Augustine and S. Bartholomew from the 17th century. Along the same wall as the altar are two more paintings, one, representing the Apparition of the Madonna to S. All Angels' Church Pulpit and Choir Rail 1900 Karl Theodore Bitter American, born Austria The Austrian-born Bitter was one of the foremost architectural sculptors working in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. This pulpit and choir rail from New Yorks All Angels Church (demolished 1978) were commissioned by Sarah R. Cornell in memory of her husband and two sons and unveiled on All Saints Day (November 1), 1900. Angels carved in high relief, playing musical instruments or carrying appropriate attributes, dramatically twist and turn as they move across the balustrade. Above the pulpit, in an apotheosis of the joyous processional theme below, a large trumpeting angel appears. Supporting the column is a partial figure of Moses holding the tablets of the Law. Religious paintings in private chapels often had both didactic and devotional purposes. From the sixteenth century, missionaries intent on imposing Catholic doctrine and Christian morality on native people promoted domestic scenes of the Holy Family such as The Carpenters Shop in Nazareth as models for proper family conduct. An oratory would also have been an apt location for a painting such as the Christ Child with Passion Symbols, whose emblematic elements made it particularly suitable for devotion.
