Virgin and Child in a Niche ca. 1500 Netherlandish Painter Netherlandish Like Davids Virgin and Child with Four Angels (displayed nearby), this picture reflects the popularity of Van Eycks Virgin and Child at the Fountain. Formerly attributed to Jan van Eyck and Petrus Christus, it is now known to have been painted about 1500, at a moment of renewed interest in Van Eycks art. The anonymous artist adopted the standing figure of the Virgin, who is lovingly embracing her Child, but placed her within a flamboyant Gothic niche adorned with statuettes of the Old Testament figures of Moses and Isaiah (above) and of the personifications of the Church and Synagogue (below).. Wedding of Mary and Joseph Unknown. Wedding of Mary and Joseph, late 17th century. Oil on canvas, 32 5/8 x 48 1/4 in. (82.9 x 122.6 cm). Here we see Mary and Joseph at the temple before a high priest clad in a richly flower-patterned hooded mantle. Assisting clergymen in contemporary dress flank him. Joseph carries his staff, flowering with lilies--a heavenly sign indicating that Joseph was chosen by God to wed Mary. Bride and groom have halos inscribed in gold. Behind the bride stands her mother, Ann, gesturing in awe and happiness. At the extreme right, a rejected suitor breaks his staff, which does not flower as Joseph's has. Overall gold stamping enriches and unifies the composition. The painting offers a glimpse into a Peruvian fantasy landscape with colorful longtailed birds and flowers scattered over the ground, transferring the biblical scene from the Holy Land to the Americas. Saint Catherine of Siena Exchanging Her Heart with Christ Giovanni di Paolo (Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia) Italian These three panels belong to a series from the base (predella) of a large altarpiece and constituted the first extensive narrative cycle of Catherine of Siena, a Sienese mystic as well as minister to the poor and plague-stricken. They were commissioned after her canonization in 1461 and are based on the biography written by her confessor, Raymond of Capua. Among the most notable features is the way space is manipulated to enhance the mystic character of their subject. Two further scenes are in The Met (Robert Lehman Collection).
