Opened in 1911, NSGL is the Navys largest training installation and the home of the Navys only Boot Camp. Located on over 1600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, the installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. David Piwowarski, the senior enlisted leader for the New York Army National Guard, holds a plaque he recently received during the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiments annual Makin Diner, Nov. 26, 2022. The unit, which is currently deployed as part of Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa, held the event overseas at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. Each November Soldiers and veterans of the regiment assemble for the dinner which commemorates the World War II Battle of Makin Island.

The wreath was placed during NASA's 2010 Day of Remembrance, observed each year in January. The annual observance memorializes the three astronauts lost in the Apollo 1 launch pad fire in 1967, the seven astronauts lost in the Challenger tragedy in 1986 and the seven astronauts lost in the Columbia accident in 2003. During the Stennis observance, Scheuermann praised the fallen astronauts as 'brave space pioneers who gave their lives in the cause of exploration and discovery.'

The U.S. Naval Submarine School, Rotary Club of Niantic, and several local public representatives honored Naval Submarine School staff member Petty Officer 1st Class Gabriel W. Muscella as the service person of the month in a ceremony in Niantic, Connecticut, Sept. 14, 2022. During the ceremony, Muscella was recognized for him many achievements at the submarine school and outside of work and was given multiple awards by local representatives, and an Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal by Capt. "Buck" Rigg (right) and his brother Art Rigg, who built the 1/6th scale model of a Douglas O-6 Observation aircraft and donated it to the Eighth Air Force Museum, Barksdale Air Force Base (AFB), Louisiana (LA), in memory of their father, Lieutenant Colonel (LCOL) H.M. "Hal" Rigg. This is the type of aircraft that Lieutenant (LT) Eugene Hoy Barksdale, namesake of Barksdale AFB, flew on Aug 11, 1926 over McCook Field, Dayton Ohio (OH) testing the airplane for spin characteristics, and attempted to bailout when he could not recover from a flat spin. His parachute became entangled in the wing's brace wires and fell to his death. Barksdale AFB celebrated its 70th anniversary, being dedicated on Feb 2, 1933.
