Fishing Boats off an Estuary 1633 Netherlands. With its low horizon line, monochrome palette, and direct paint handling, this intimate panel is characteristic of the river landscapes of Jan van Goyenís early maturity. Harbour at Sunrise by Claude Gellee, called Glaude Lorrain. Oil on canvas, 1637-1638. An imaginary harbour, at the first light of dawn. On the right, a Roman triumphal arch catches the early rays of the sun. Claude Lorrain - a Frenchman who worked in Rome was a master at capturing the atmosphere of each particular time of day. His poetic, Itallanate landscapes influenced many of his contemporaries, including the Dutch Italianates.

Aeneas at the Court of Latinus by Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680) oil on canvas, c 1661-1664. Bol's painting, made for the Amsterdam Admiralty, shows a scene from Virgil's Aeneid. Aeneas congratulates one of the four ships' captains who competed in a race. All four were rewarded on their return, even the captain who threw his helmsman overboard for disobeying an order. The painting was accompanied by a poem by Vondel, stressing the importance of firmness and generosity in good government.
