RIMPAC 2022 is the 28th exercise in the series that began in 1971.

U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 113th Infantry Regiment conduct a platoon attack drill at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. on Oct. 15, 2022. During the drill the platoon lead squad locates and suppresses the enemy, establishes supporting fire, and assaults the enemy position using fire and maneuver. The platoon destroys or causes the enemy to withdraw and conducts consolidation and reorganization thereafter. Once the platoon conducts action on enemy contact, the squad or section in contact reacts to contact by immediately returning well-aimed fire on known enemy positions. Dismounted Soldiers assume the nearest covered positions available and the element in contact attempts to achieve suppressive fires. Once achieved, the element leader notifies the platoon leader of the action.

NURISTAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan - U.S. Army Soldiers from Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry Regiment, climb a steep mountain path outside the village of Tupac, Afghanistan, Jan. 21. After seven hours of dismounted searching through rugged terrain, Co. C and their Afghan counterparts from Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 201st Infantry Corp, located an improvised explosive device along Route Iowa, thanks to a tip from someone in the area of Tupac, Afghanistan. The Soldiers had been struck by an IED in Tupac two days earlier. Fortunately, no U.S. or Afghan Soldiers were injured in the attack. After locating the IED, the Soldiers then walked back to Forward Operating Base Kalagush, hiking about eight miles up and down mountains for the day.

Airmen with multiple Air National Guard security forces units learn squad tactics pulling an ahkio sled Jan. 18, 2023, as part of a 16-day Cold-Weather Operations Course led by the Air Force at Fort McCoy, Wis. More than 50 Airmen were participating in the training from across the Air Force. Besides learning about use of snowshoes and moving as a squad over terrain pulling an ahkio sled in a cold-weather environment, the Airmen also learned about cold-weather shelters, survival techniques, cold-weather uniform wear, and more. Fort McCoy has a long history of supporting cold-weather training. Eighty years prior to this training, in January 1943, the installation hosted winter training for the Army's 76th Division prior to the Division deploying to Europe to fight in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
