Stephen Beitashour, a professional soccer player from the San Jose Earthquakes, was asked to demonstrate kicking the ball for his student audience. With the increased globalization of soccer, more young people are playing the sport and developing motor skills to compete effectively. To enhance their skills, students in the United States and Canada recently were given the opportunity to discuss with a NASA scientist the aerodynamics of the newly designed soccer ball. To help student soccer players better understand the movement of the ball, NASA scientists at the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory at NASAs Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., recently tested the performance of the Jabulani design, and compared it to the 2006 design. Included in this study was Rabi Mehta who had done previous tests on tennis and cricket balls in wind tunnels.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Sept. 5, 2022) U.S. Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Travis Thompson, from Johnson City, Tennessee, plays soccer with children during a community relations event conducted prior to the beginning of UNITAS LXIII, Sept. 5, 2022. UNITAS is the worlds longest-running maritime exercise. Hosted this year by Brazil, it brings together multinational forces from Belize, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Namibia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and the United States conducting operations in and off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The exercise trains forces to conduct joint maritime operations through the execution of anti-surface, anti-submarine, anti-air, amphibious and electronic warfare operations that enhance warfighting proficiency and increase interoperability among participating naval and marine forces.

Camaraderie, sportsmanship and the opportunity to Bend it like Beckham hit the pitch April 9 as Army Support Activity-Black Sea organized a multinational soccer tournament on Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base April 9, 2022. The field of competitors included 19 teams from the deployed units from U.S., France, Romania, and United Kingdom. The all-day tournament ended with the team from Romania emerging as the victor. ASA-BS in Romania is one of 31 sites belonging to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz.
