. The god is making the abhaya mudra, or fear not’ gesture, with his front right hand and the varada mudra, the wish granting’ gesture, with his left. In his raised, rear hands he holds two of his attributes, an axe and a deer. These attributes are found only in images of Shiva from South India.

Date: late 13th century, probably 1286-92.This is one of a number of miniature versions of a large-scale cult icon depicting the Buddhist savior, the Bodhisattva Amoghapasa, in eight-armed form. The style, iconography, and dedicatory inscription on the reverse link this plaque to stone steles from Candi Jago, a late thirteenth-century royal foundation temple, in East Java. The parent icon is dated by inscription to 1286, during the reign of King Krtanagara Visvarupakumara, who is named as the patron of this metal plaque. . The god Vishnu has many incarnations, or avatars, of which Krishna is one of the most important. In his rear set of hands, this Krishna holds two of Vishnus standard attributes, the wheel and the conch. With his front set of hands, he is making the gesture of flute playing. There are countless stories about Krishna, who is also the main character in the great Hindu epic, the Bhagavad Gita.

(24.1 x 12.4 x 4.8cm), Gilt bronze, China, 18th century, Although mirror images of each other, these two statues likely do not represent the same bodhisattva; they are more probably the popular deities Maitraya and Avalokitesvara. Standing in graceful posture holding the stalk of a lotus flower, they likely formed part of a sculptural triad flanking a larger bronze image of the Buddha.

Kali is the Hindu goddess associated with eternal energy. 'She who destroys'. The name Kali comes from kala, which means black, time, death, lord of death, Shiva. Kali means 'the black one'. Since Shiva is called Kala - the eternal time, Kali, his consort, also means 'Time' or 'Death' (as in time has come). Hence, Kali is considered the goddess of time and change. Although sometimes presented as dark and violent, her earliest incarnation as a figure of annihilation still has some influence. Various Shakta Hindu cosmologies, as well as Shakta Tantric beliefs, worship her as the ultimate reality or Brahman. She is also revered as Bhavatarini (literally 'redeemer of the universe'). Kali is represented as the consort of Lord Shiva, on whose body she is often seen standing. She is associated with many other Hindu goddesses like Durga, Bhadrakali, Sati, Rudrani, Parvati and Chamunda. She is the foremost among the Dasa Mahavidyas, ten fierce Tantric goddesses.

Four-Armed Goddess, possibly Sarada late 9th century India (Jammu and Kashmir, ancient kingdom of Kashmir) This crowned goddess, wearing a distinctive Kashmiri-style kurta-mode of dress, holds an upright sword in one hand and the severed head of a goat in the other. She likely represents Sarada (autumn), the Kashmiri synonym for Saravati, the goddess of learning. Her two lower hands rest on two diminutive male figures, each holding a manuscript, who presumably embody the complementary elements of knowledge (vidya) and wisdom (jnana) and consciously mimic Vishnus personified weapons, the purusas. Tara 1100-1200 Bihar, North-East India, Basalt. The name Tara means 'saviouress'. She is a goddess widely worshipped for her protective powers and compassionate nature. Here she holds a lotus in one hand and makes the gesture of granting wishes with the other. The architectural composition, with Tara standing against an elaborate throne back, suggests that the relief was a miniature shrine.

Rati is the Hindu goddess of love, carnal desire, lust, passion and sexual pleasure. Usually described as the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, Rati is the female counterpart, the chief consort and the assistant of Kama (Kamadeva), the god of love. A constant companion of Kama, she is often depicted with him in legend and temple sculpture. She also enjoys worship along with Kama. Rati is often associated with the arousal and delight of sexual activity, and many sex techniques and positions derive their Sanskrit names from hers. The Hindu scriptures stress her beauty and sensuality. They depict her as a maiden who has the power to enchant the god of love. When the god Shiva burnt her husband to ashes, it was Rati, whose beseeching or penance, leads to the promise of Kama's resurrection. Often, this resurrection occurs when Kama is reborn as Pradyumna, the son of Krishna. The Ashtamahabhaya iconography first appears in conjunction with Avalokitesvara imagery in rock-cut sanctuaries in western India.
