Shri Sheshanarayana 1880-85 West Bengal, Calcutta Here we see Vishnu Narayanathe primordial god who resides in water (nara)stirring from his slumber on the cosmic ocean supported by the divine serpent Shesha, a celebrated moment that simultaneously marks the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of a new age (kalpa). This is one of the five cosmic emanations of the Divine Vishnu, distinct from his celebrated appearances on earth, most famously the ten avatars (Das-avatars). The cosmic snake Shesha coils his body to form a bed for the recumbent Vishnu and his multiple hoodsten are shownform a protective canopy. Vishnu, Brahma and Lakshmi are richly dressed in silken robes and wear elaborate pointed crowns. Vishnu is further adorned with strings of large pearls, the treasure of the cosmic ocean over which he presides, the riches of which he shares with the wife, the goddess Lakshmi. The Kizil Caves (also romanized Qizil Caves, spelling variant Qyzyl; Uyghur: Qizil Ming Öy; Chinese: 孜尔千佛洞; pinyin: Kèzīěr Qiānfú Dòng; literally 'Kizil Cave of a Thousand Buddhas') are a set of 236 Buddhist rock-cut caves located near Kizil Township (孜尔乡) in Baicheng County, Xinjiang, China. The site is located on the northern bank of the Muzat River 75 kilometres (by road) northwest of Kucha (Kuqa). This area was a commercial hub of the Silk Road. The caves are said to be the earliest major Buddhist cave complex in China, with development occurring between the 3rd and 8th centuries. Although the site has been both damaged and looted, at least 1000 square metres of wall paintings - mostly Jataka stories - remain. Mallabhum (Bengali: মল্লভূম) was the kingdom ruled by the Malla kings of Bishnupur primarily in the present Bankura district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Begum Nur Jahan (Persian/Urdu: ) (alternative spelling Noor Jahan, Nur Jehan, Nor Jahan, etc. ) (1577-1645), also known as Mehr-un-Nisaa, was an Empress of the Mughal Dynasty that ruled much of the Indian subcontinent. She was an aunt of Empress Mumtaz Mahal, Emperor Shah Jahan's wife for whom the Taj Mahal was constructed. Begum Nur Jahan was the twentieth and favourite wife of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who was her second husband - and the most famous Empress of the Mughal Empire. The story of the couple's infatuation for each other and the relationship that abided between them is the stuff of many (often apocryphal) legends. She remains historically significant for the sheer amount of imperial authority she wielded - the true 'power behind the throne', as Jehangir was battling serious addictions to alcohol and opium throughout his reign - and is known as one of the most powerful women who ruled India.

Lak Muang (Lak Mueang) are City pillars found in most cities of Thailand. Usually housed in a shrine which is also believed to house Chao Pho Lak Mueang, the city spirit deity; it is held in high esteem by citizens. It was probably King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (Rama I), who erected the first city pillar on April 21, 1782, when he moved his capital from Thonburi to Bangkok. The shrine was actually the first building of his new capital, the Palace and other buildings were created later. Wat Chedi Luang translates literally from the Thai as Monastery of the Great Stupa’. Construction of the temple began at the end of the 14th century when the Lan Na Kingdom was in its prime. King Saen Muang Ma (1385-1401) intended it as the site of a great reliquary to enshrine the ashes of his father, King Ku Na (1355-85). Today it is the the site of the Lak Muang or City Pillar. Woodcarvings have been an integral part of houses and temples in Nepal since the 12th century and the art reached its peak during the 15th and 16th centuries CE. Wood being an abundant raw material, woodcarvings were simply everywhere: wooden doors, windows, cornices, pillars, struts or beams in Newar houses were all adorned with complex ornamental patterns. Temples, too, received a generous share of attention, but here, naturally, religious motifs were dominant. The woods of various trees were employed, including sisu, champa, deodar, haldu and teak; but the most favoured wood was that of the sal tree. The sal tree (Shorea robusta), formerly found in abundance in the Tarai and the valleys of the higher mountain ranges, provided the most hardy of Nepalese woods, reputed to last a thousand years, whether exposed to air or water, or for that matter, termites. Sheetala, the smallpox goddess, is simultaneously benevolent and dangerous: she can both protect and infect, bless and curse devotees with smallpox and other diseases. Persons scarred by smallpox are believed to have been graced by her. She is appeased so that she does not infect her worshippers. Her name, Sheetala, Cool One,” refers to her birth out of a cooled sacrificial fire. The rippled curtains above her are suggestive of theatrical tableau and Sheetalapala (The Drama of Sheetala) that was performed in Bengal. She sits astride her vehicle (vahana), the donkey, regarded as an inauspicious animal.
