Shown with full face forward in all white, Shiva, the four-armed deity, has the all-seeing third eye in his brow and holds only a manuscript. Javanese dance is the dances and art forms that were created and influenced by Javanese culture. Javanese dance is usually associated with the courtly, refined and sophisticated culture of the Javanese kratons, such as the Bedhaya and Srimpi dance. However, in a wider sense, Javanese dance also includes the dances of Javanese commoners and villagers such as Ronggeng, Tayub, Reog, and Kuda Lumping. Javanese dance is usually associated with Wayang wong, and the palaces of Yogyakarta and Surakarta due to the nature of dance being a pusaka or sacred heirloom from ancestors of the palace rulers. These expressive dances are more than just dances, they are also used for moral education, emotional expression, and spreading of the Javanese culture.

Goddess Jagadhatri West Bengal, Calcutta ca. 1870-80 Jagadhatri represents an aspect of the Hindu goddess Durga (Parvati) widely worshipped in West Bengal and Odisha, and most lavishly in the annual puja held in the Hooghly district of Kolkata, celebrated in the month of Kartik (mid-November). The goddess rides a lion which has slain an elephantvisible between the lions forelegswhile it holds the trunk in its jaws. She is dressed in red and seen in four-armed form, displaying a discus and conch in her upper hands (acknowledging Vishnu) and a bow and arrow in her lower hands. Her mouth open slightly in song, the womans hennaed fingers strum a three-string vina, an Indian musical instrument with a resonator made from a gourd. Music was an essential component of courtly entertainment, along with the drinking of wine and the appreciation of poetry, paintings, and jewels. On the verso, the first two lines in Persian read: Once again, Iraqi broke his vows: From the cup of love he became intoxicated and ecstatic. The excerpt from the mystic poet Jami is more of a pious injunction: Until you are bold enough to take to the seas, You will not reap spiritual benefits from your inner heart. Unless you pitch your tent next to the spiritual guide, You will not enjoy him to the fullest.

Agamani 1878-1883 West Bengal, Calcutta Agamani-vijaya is a genre of popular Bengali (Bangla) song based on the stories of Shiva and Parvati and particularly favored for singing during the Durga puja festival season in the autumn. The songs tell of Parvati, the daughter of the king of the Himalayas, who marries Shiva, seemingly a yogic ascetic with no visible means of support. Parvatis mother Menace sought Shivas permission for her daughter to have a visit to her parental home. The songs composed about her homecoming are known as Agamani songs. Here we see the beautiful and regal Parvati returning home on her lion, cradling the infant Ganesha. Her mother and maid servants Jaya and Vijaya rush forward to greet them. Parvatis eldest son Skanda appears in the heavenly clouds astride his peacock accompanied by the goddesses Sarasvati and Lakshmi, bearing witness to this joyous reunion. The Heart Sūtra (Sanskrit: प्रज्ञाारमिताहृदय Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya; Chinese: 般若波羅蜜多心經) is a Mahāyāna Buddhist sūtra. Its Sanskrit name Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya literally translates to 'Heart of the Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom'. The Heart Sūtra is often cited as the best known and most popular of all Buddhist scriptures. The core teaching is the remphasis of sunyata / dependent origination as the cardinal doctrine of Buddhism. The Pāla Empire was one of the major middle kingdoms of India and existed from 750-1174 CE. It was ruled by a Buddhist dynasty from Bengal in the eastern region of the Indian subcontinent, all the rulers bearing names ending with the suffix Pala (Modern Bengali: পাল pāl), which means protector. The Palas were often described by opponents as the Lords of Gauda. The Palas were followers of the Mahayana and Tantric schools of Buddhism.

Shiva-Gauri 1878-1883 West Bengal, Calcutta Depictions of Shiva and Parvati-Gauri in their Himalayan abode on Mt. Kailash has been a favorite subject since the early medieval period, as relief sculptures from Kashmir and Nepal attest. Here the artists of the Calcutta Art Studio have re-envisaged this traditional subject, creating a hybrid interpretation that owes as much to late Victorian imagery as it does to Indian conventions. The incident depicted is elaborated in the note sheet that accompanied this print: Gauri asked Shiva to explain the secret of the Yoga-shastra to her, but as this is not intended for human ears, they found an isolated spot and placed Nandin to stand guard. Eventually Gauri fell asleep while Shiva went on talking, but Shiva was so absorbed in his exposition that he continued without noticing. When Gauri woke up she asked what she had missed. Begum Nur Jahan (Persian/Urdu: ) (alternative spelling Noor Jahan, Nur Jehan, Nor Jahan, etc. ) (1577-1645), also known as Mehr-un-Nisaa, was an Empress of the Mughal Dynasty that ruled much of the Indian subcontinent. She was an aunt of Empress Mumtaz Mahal, Emperor Shah Jahan's wife for whom the Taj Mahal was constructed. Begum Nur Jahan was the twentieth and favourite wife of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who was her second husband - and the most famous Empress of the Mughal Empire. The story of the couple's infatuation for each other and the relationship that abided between them is the stuff of many (often apocryphal) legends. She remains historically significant for the sheer amount of imperial authority she wielded - the true 'power behind the throne', as Jehangir was battling serious addictions to alcohol and opium throughout his reign - and is known as one of the most powerful women who ruled India.

The Ramayana is a story as old as time and - at least in the Indian subcontinent and across much of Southeast Asia - of unparalleled popularity. More than two thousand three hundred years ago the scholar-poet Valmiki sat down to write his definitive epic of love and war. The poem Valmiki composed is styled the Ramayana, or 'Romance of Rama' in Sanskrit. In its present form, the Sanskrit version consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. The Ramakien is the Thai version of this epic and has an important influence on Thai literature, art and drama. It is regarded as the National Epic of Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha); full official name Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. The tree motifs frame the young woman, seen against a monochromatic ground with arching skyline, gesturing to the snakes who respond to her movements. Goddess Tara ca. 1880-85 West Bengal, Calcutta This remarkable image has all the trappings of the goddess Kali but is named as the mahavidya Tara, a personification of the transcendent wisdom who guides devotees to salvation (moksha), protecting them on their journey. She is also worshipped as the source of divine energy including the power of the sun. Iconographically she is distinguished from Kali was her dark blue complexion and a swelling stomach indicating her pregnant state. In other respects, they share much, both being four-armed and wielding two butchering blades, wearing a garland of severed human heads and striding on the prostrate body of Shiva. However, unlike Kali she displays a white lotus and a skull cap (kapala) in her other hands.While Kali favors charnel grounds, Tara is depicted here in lushly forested mountain terrain. Pierre Sonnerat (1748-1814) was a French naturalist and explorer who made several voyages to southeast Asia between 1769 and 1781. He published this two-volume account of his voyage of 1774-81 in 1782. Volume 1 deals exclusively with India, whose culture Sonnerat very much admired, and is especially noteworthy for its extended discussion of religion in India, Hinduism in particular. The book is illustrated with engravings based on Sonnerat's drawings. Among the most interesting illustrations are Sonnerat's pictures of various Hindu deities.

The Hindu god Vishnu resides in a heavenly realm, but when humankind requires his help, he descends to earth to save the day, riding on the back of a part-man, part-eagle creature named Garuda. Although Vishnus blue color is not explained in Hindu scriptures, several Hindu pundits have suggested that his color reflects his home above the clouds. Hand-colored image painted on a thin sheet of mica from a manuscript entitled: 'Seventy-Two Specimens of Caste in India' (Madura, southern India: 1837). The full manuscript consists of 72 full-color hand-painted images of men and women of the various castes and religious and ethnic groups found in Madura, Tamil Nadu, at that time. The manuscript shows Indian dress and jewelry adornment in the Madura region as they appeared before the onset of Western influences on South Asian dress and style. Each illustrated portrait is captioned in English and in Tamil, and the title page of the work includes English, Tamil, and Telugu.
