Isurumuniya Vihara is a rock temple built during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa (r. 307 - 267 BC). Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka's ancient capitals and famous for its well-preserved ruins. From the 4th century BC until the beginning of the 11th century AD it was the capital. During this period it remained one of the most stable and durable centers of political power and urban life in South Asia. The ancient city, considered sacred to the Buddhist world, is today surrounded by monasteries covering an area of over sixteen square miles (40 km).

This print of the Death of Maricha dates to 1913. Rama fired his Astra (weapon) Manavastra (which could hit a target miles away) from his bow. The arrow struck Maricha's chest and threw him a hundred leagues away, into the ocean. In the Hindu epic Ramayana, Maricha (also spelled Mareecha) is a demon, who was killed by Rama, the hero of the epic and an avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Wat Hang Dong is a typical example of traditional Lan Na temple architecture. The old viharn at this temple is a little more elaborate than its counterpart at nearby Wat Ton Kwen, but is essentially similar in shape, style and appearance. Also dark and intimate, with a low, sweeping, three-tiered roof, the viharn shelters a collection of Buddha images, at least two of which to the right and left of the main Buddha image are distinctively Lao in style and yet somehow strangely primitive. The old viharn at Wat Hang Dong has now been beautifully restored, and a new ubosot has also been added just a few metres to the northwest. This newer structure follows quite faithfully the traditional Lan Na design (the sum of some windows are perhaps over-elaborate and seem to show significant traces of Burmese influence), but overall the new ubosot at Wat Hang Dong both mirrors and complements the old viharn.

Wat Phou was a part of the Khmer empire, centred on Angkor to the southwest, at least as early as the reign of Yashovarman I in the early 10th century. Later, the original buildings were replaced, but some of the original stone blocks were reused. The temple as it stands today was built primarily during the Koh Ker and Baphuon periods of the 11th century. Minor changes were made during the following two centuries, before the temple, like most in the empire, was converted to Theravada Buddhist use. This continued after the area came under control of the Lao, and a festival is held on the site each February. Little restoration work has been done, other than the restoration of boundary posts along the path. Wat Phou was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.

In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Draupadi is the daughter of King Draupada of Panchala and the wife of the five Pandavas, who were the sons of Pandu. She is one of the five virgins of the ancient Hindu epic. In the epic, Dushasana, a Kurava brother, wanted Draupadi, who scorned him. After winning Draupadi and others in a game of dice, Dushasana drags her away by the hair and then tries to disrobe her, but her sari keeps unfolding and unwrappingas pictured here in this 1913 illustration by Warwick Goble (1862-1943), a Victorian illustrator of children's books.

Shri Shanmukha Subramania Swami ca. 1900-15 India The first son of Shiva and Parvati is Skanda, the god of war, born of Shivas sperm and Parvatis womb (a complicated story). His name can most credibly be read as meaning ‘jumping, an action associated with both virile young men in combat and with Skandas favored mount, the peacock. He has assumed many epithets, from Kartikeya in the northwest to Muragan (‘divine youth) and, as here, Subrahmanya (‘pious, dear to Brahmans) in the south. In this richly colored print, he has assumed a title much favored in Tamil Nadu, Shanmukha (‘six-faced) Subrahmanya, the multi-faced form alluding to Skanda being raised by six divine foster parents. The youthful Skanda is shown accompanied by his two wives, Devasena and Valli, who hail from North and South India respectively, so emphasizing his universality. He is twelve-armed, nine of which display his armory and three gently embrace his wives. Skanda of the South rarely displays the warrior-char

The British conquest of Burma began in 1824 in response to a Burmese attempt to invade India. By 1886, and after two further wars, Britain had incorporated the entire country into the British Raj. To stimulate trade and facilitate changes, the British brought in Indians and Chinese, who quickly displaced the Burmese in urban areas. To this day Rangoon and Mandalay have large ethnic Indian populations. Railways and schools were built, as well as a large number of prisons, including the infamous Insein Prison, then as now used for political prisoners. Burmese resentment was strong and was vented in violent riots that paralysed Rangoon on occasion all the way until the 1930s. Burma was administered as a province of British India until 1937 when it became a separate, self-governing colony. Burma finally gained independence from Britain on January 4, 1948.
