Chandhu La'l Indian. Chandhu La'l, 1875-1900. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, sheet: 19 11/16 x 11 13/16 in. (50.0 x 30.0 cm). This portrait depicts a courtier who served the nizam (ruler) of Hyderabad in the early nineteenth century. In a composition that was typical of the period, Chandhu Lal is depicted seated on a carpet, surrounded by cushions, and holding a flower, with his sword lying before him. He wears the thin white cotton coat that was standard attire for aristocrats in India, and an impressive turban ornament, or sarpech, with pendant emeralds, probably a gift from the nizam. Krishna Quells the Serpent Kaliya, c. 1890. Eastern India, Bengal, Kolkata, Kalighat. Watercolor, graphite, and ink on paper; secondary support: 48.1 x 29.7 cm (18 15/16 x 11 11/16 in.); painting only: 45.7 x 27.8 cm (18 x 10 15/16 in.). The serpent Kaliya was poisoning the water of the Yamuna River near the residence of the cowherding community, where Krishna spent his youth. The animals were dying of the toxins. Krishna wrestled the mighty serpent then emerged from the water to dance on his head. Pleading with Krishna to set him free, Kaliyas wives are shown like mermaids.

Krishna subduing Kaliya 1885-95 West Bengal, Calcutta The Krishna Kaliya legend, as recounted in Book 10 of the Bhagavata Purana, tells of Krishnas triumph over a mighty river snake-king (nagaraja) who has been poisoning the waters of the Yamuna River where the cowherd community (gopis) bathe. The community of cowherds appeal to the youthful Krishna to rid them of the naga Kaliya and restore the purity of the sacred river Yamuna. Krishna challenges Kaliya, who rises up from the depths only to be defeated by Krishna, who dances triumphantly on the snakes hood, all the while playing on his flute. The nagas wives (nagini)—six are shown here rising from dark poisonous water with their hands raised in supplication (anjali)—plead with Krishna to spare their husbands life. Krisna extends compassion to all and Kaliya is allowed to live, having submitted to Krishnas grace and so been liberated from corruption and impurity. Vishnu (Sanskrit िष्णु Viṣṇu) is the Supreme god in the Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism. Smarta followers of Adi Shankara, among others, venerate Vishnu as one of the five primary forms of God. The Vishnu Sahasranama declares Vishnu as Paramatma (supreme soul) and Parameshwara (supreme God). It describes Vishnu as the All-Pervading essence of all beings, the master of - and beyond - the past, present and future, one who supports, sustains and governs the Universe and originates and develops all elements within. Vishnu governs the aspect of preservation and sustenance of the universe, so he is called 'Preserver of the Universe'. In the Puranas, Vishnu is described as having the divine colour of water filled clouds, four-armed, holding a lotus, mace, conch (shankha) and chakra (wheel). Vishnu is also described in the Bhagavad Gita as having a 'Universal Form' (Vishvarupa) which is beyond the ordinary limits of human perception or imagination. The Konbaung Dynasty was the last dynasty that ruled Burma (Myanmar), from 1752 to 1885. The dynasty created the second largest empire in Burmese history, and continued the administrative reforms begun by the Toungoo dynasty, laying the foundations of modern state of Burma. The reforms proved insufficient to stem the advance of the British, who defeated the Burmese in all three Anglo-Burmese wars over a six-decade span (1824-1885) and ended the millennium-old Burmese monarchy in 1885.

The name Horus is the Latinized form. In Egyptian it was Hor, which translates as 'face.' Horus was first a sky god, and then came to be identified with the sun. The Egyptians honored him as the son of the deities Isis and Osiris, and he was thought to served Osiris, the god of the dead, as a war captain. In this 1915 illustration that shows a relief found in a temple at Edfu, Horus is seen spearing a hippotamus, around which he has wound a double chain of metal. A falcon flies above Horus.
