India: Squatting on a footpath in Mumbai, a sadhu or Hindu wandering ascetic / holy man lights his chillum to smoke hashish. A chillum is a kind of clay pipe traditionally used to smoke tobacco or intoxicants. Although the consumption of hashish and ganja (marihuana) is prohibited in India, in the case of sadhus the police turn a blind eye, as it is regarded as part of the sadhus' religious practice. Sadhus are usually followers of Lord Shiva who is said to have smoked hashish, partly as a medicinal herb. Another moniker for Shiva is Aushadheshwara (Lord of medicinal plants).

Kumbh Mela 2025: The Sacred Goes Viral. United in Devotion. The Maha Kumbh Mela is more than just a pilgrimage. A Gathering of Souls at the Maha Kumbh Mela. It is a profound communal experience where people from all walks of life come together, bound by faith and tradition. Pilgrims rest on the steps, sharing stories, meals, and moments of reflection before continuing their sacred journey. Strangers become companions, and the collective spirit of devotion transforms the vast gathering into a temporary yet deeply connected community. This image captures the essence of the Kumbh Mela, where faith is not only a personal quest but a shared experience of unity and devotion.

The earliest mention of Kashgar occurs when a Chinese Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE) envoy traveled the Northern Silk Road to explore lands to the west. Another early mention of Kashgar is during the Former Han (also known as the Western Han Dynasty), when in 76 BCE the Chinese conquered the Xiongnu, Yutian (Khotan), Sulei (Kashgar), and a group of states in the Tarim basin almost up to the foot of the Tian Shan mountains. Ptolemy spoke of Scythia beyond the Imaus, which is in a 'Kasia Regio', probably exhibiting the name from which Kashgar is formed. The country's people practised Zoroastrianism and Buddhism before the coming of Islam. The celebrated Old Uighur prince Sultan Satuq Bughra Khan converted to Islam late in the 10th century and his Uighur kingdom lasted until 1120 but was distracted by complicated dynastic struggles. The Uighurs employed an alphabet based upon the Syriac and borrowed from the Nestorian, but after converting to Islam widely used also an Arabic script. They
