Farmer driving tractor in field

Here is picture of Bob Dyer back home in Tennessee with his brother Fred. They are cutting a prize crop of burley tobacco - which is one of the things Tennessee is noted for. Bob has a knife attached to the end of a stick, (no stopping) to snip off the stalks at the ground, they are then handed to brother who fits a sharp point over the stick on which the stalks are threaded. Then they are hung in open air barns, top down to dry and "cure" - after they are dry, a rainy day is utilized to take them down. - (Moisture in the air softens the leaves) and pack them in heaps or bales. They are covered by tarpoleons to keep the moisture. February 11, 1953.
