Mecca Air Lift -- Moslem pilgrims from Turkey board a USA Air Force Plane in Beirut, Lebanon. The Plane was one of 14 USA Air Force transport planes brought in to form a "Mecca Airlift" for pilgrims stranded at Beirut without Flight Accommodation Most of the Pilgrims carry umbrella because after landing in Jeddah they must discard their hats for the duration of the Pilgrimage. Boeing 707 First Flight; Jet Transport Leaps Into Air - Boeing Airplane Company's new 707 -- America's first jet transport -- is shown here as it climbed steeply away from the Renton (Wash.) Municipal Airport, after using only 2,100 feet of the 5,400-foot runway. The big four-jet prototype remained in the air one hour and 24 minutes before touching down at Seattle's Boeing Field, where it will now undergo a thorough testing and evaluation program. A private investment of more than $15 million by Boeing, the big jet will be used to demonstrate the potential of jet power for military tanker-transport use and its capabilities as an 80-to -130 -passenger, 550-miles-per-hour commercial transport. "Brabazon" Named At Bristol -- More than seven thousand aircraft workers stood in pouring rain at Filton Airport, Bristol, today October 8, to watch the christening of the giant prototype "Brabazon I", Britain's largest land plane. Forerunner Of Transatlantic Flying-Boats Makes First Appearance -- A General view of the Giant Flying-boat on the slipway at Rochester today. The first of eight new giant flying-boats, built for imperial airways, went down the slipway for the first time, here today, boats of similar design, not yet completed, will be the first for the transatlantic air route. The machine displayed here today weighs 17½ tons, has a cruising speed of 150 m.p.h., and will be used for empire routes. August 3, 1936.

The aircraft, coming in from Wiesbaden to aid the air lift to Berlin is twin-engined, box-shaped, has detachable rear door, can lower ramps for car transport. Has twin tall booms. Russian Plane Of The Future -- This artist's conception was released today by American aviation magazine which termed it an illustration of a possible Russian atomic plane of the future. The drawing, the magazine said, is similar to one which appeared in the soviet technical press as an illustration for an article by Prof. G.I. Pokrovski. The Russian Professor explained that the powerplant must be as far to the rear as possible to give passengers maximum protection from radiation. Hence the long, needle-like fuselage. Jet liner hijacked to Cuba. The United Airlines flight from Cleveland took on fuel at Atlanta and them continued to Cuba. The hijacker was imprisoned in Cuba and later fatally shot escaping from prison in 1973, March 11, 1970.
