And the Fleet Calls her "Able Mabel" -- In one of the most startling airplane photographs ever made, A. Martin AM-1 Mauler, the Navy's largest, fastest, most heavily armed carrier-based dive-torpedo bomber, is pictured carrying a payload of more than 9000 pounds -- three full-size torpedoes, 12 five-inch rockets and four 20 mm. aerial cannon. The Mauler's all-up weight as it was photographed was 25,520 pounds. In other words, the deadly Mauler's total weight and payload are well in excess of the comparable figures for an ordinary twin-engine air-liner. The payload of destruction pictured on the Mauler above is considerably less than the maximum possible for the single-engine, one-man airplane, which can fly at an all-up weight of more than 29,000 pounds with a payload of almost 6 tons. A Meyers 200D departing Flabob airport in Riverside, CA. The Meyers 200 is a single engine piston airplane and was designed by Al Meyers in the late 1950's and built by the Meyers Aircraft Company until 1965. Aero Commander then built them until 1967.
