Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Daican War 1553 Nicolas Beatrizet French This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. The Entombment of Christ before 1475 Andrea Mantegna Italian This impression was formerly mounted on top of a facsimile that filled in the losses. Either the facsimile was printed on gauzy fabric or the gauzy fabric lay on top of the print and served to blur the distinction between the engraving and the facsimile. At the time of the Mantegna exhibition in 1992, the print was removed from its mount and the beauty of the impression recognized., in spite of its fragmentary condition. It was included in the exhibition in its New York venue but was not discussed in the catalogue. Watermark: crown in circle.Vasari suggested that it was Baldini's engravings that inspired Mantegna to take up the medium. Recent scholars are also of the opinion that Florentine examples provided Mantegna with a starting point for the development of his own technique. Christ in Limbo ca. 1547-48 Luca Penni Italian Trained in the studio of Raphael (1483-1520) in Rome, Luca Penni then assisted his brother-in-law Perino del Vaga (1501-1547) in Lucca and Genoa, before travelling to France around 1537-38, later joining Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540) and Francesco Primaticcio (1504-1570) to work in the employ of the French king, François I. This newly-discovered drawing was until recently believed to be lost: it is a splendid example of Penni's mature fluid style as a draftsman and his inventive, densely-wrought compositions of the French period. Done around the time of the artist's arrival in Paris around 1547, the drawing was realized in preparing the design of an etching of Christ in Limbo, as proved by the incisions around the contours of the figures.The print, produced by the French engraver Léon Davent, shows the composition in reverse: the Museum owns the only impression of this print in America (inv. 59.596.33).As Perrin Stein has pointed out (curat
