US Civil War, Battle of Shiloh, also called the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, April 6-7, 1862. Corinth Road separated the Union forces under the command of General Ulysses Grant, at right, and the Confederate forces on the left. The commemorative print by published McCormick Harvesting Machine Co. in 1885, features a bright red harvester untouched by the battle. US Civil War. Battle of Antietam, also called Battle of Sharpsburg, Sept. 17, 1862. WASTED GALLANTRY, a painting by Captain James Hope, of the 2nd Vermont Infantry. Union soldiers advance through a Cornfield, crossing the corpse filled 'Bloody Lane', while receiving Confederate fire from two directions. In 20 minutes, this regiment suffered more than 50 percent causalities. James Hope, a soldier and professional artist, was 43 years old when he made sketches at the Battle of Antietam, from which he made oil paintings in the 1880s (BSLOC_2018_7_159)
