Peninsular War (1808-1814). On the morning of 1st December 1808, the French dragoons appeared in front of Madrid. At midday Napoleon arrived at Chamartin, a town a league away from the capital, settling in the palace of the Duke of Infantado. On the 3rd Napoleon himself, from a house on the hill of Maudes, led the attack on Madrid. When Napoleon noticed a resistance he had not counted on, he ordered the cannons to open fire against the walls of the Retiro, which dominated Madrid and whose defense had been neglected. Once the breach in the walls was opened, the soldiers of Villatte rushed through it, seizing the Real Fábrica de Porcelana Porcelain Factory (Royal Buen Retiro Porcelain Factory), the palace and the Observatory, moving along the Prado. The Second Sino-Japanese War is usually dated from 1937 to Japan's final defeat in 1945, but in fact Japan and China had been in a state of undeclared war from the time of the Mukden Incident in 1931 when Japan seized Manchuria and set up the puppet state of Manchukuo. The Japanese installed the former Qing Emperor Puyi as Head of State in 1932, and two years later he was declared Emperor of Manchukuo with the era name of Kangde ('Tranquility and Virtue'). Manchukuo would remain in Japanese hands until the Red Army swept across the frontier from the Soviet Union in 1945, at the end of the Second World War, and routed the Japanese in several weeks of bitter fighting.

Normandy, France, 15 July 1944Nebraska's 134th Infantry Regiment, part of the 35th Infantry Division from Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri, reported for active federal service in December 1940. Following three years of extensive stateside training, the 134th sailed for England in May, 1944. On 5 July, one month after D-Day, the regiment landed at Omaha Beach and moved swiftly inland with the rest of the 35th Division. The 134th waited in reserve as the U.S. V and XIX Corps struggled to liberate the vital town of St. Lo. Strong German positions atop Hill 122 north of the city had all but stopped the attack of the combat-weary and understrength 29th Division, which had assaulted Omaha Beach one month before, and the 30th Division, which had been in combat almost as long. On 11 July, the 35th joined its fellow National Guard divisions in the fight for St. Lo and quickly discovered the special difficulties posed by the formidable tangles of rock, earth, and trees called "hedgerows."

An 18th-century Chinese painting depicting a naval battle between wokou pirates and the Chinese. Wokou (), "Japanese pirates" or "dwarf pirates", were pirates who raided the coastlines of China and Korea from the 13th century to the 16th century. The wokou came from Japanese, Korean, and Chinese ethnicities which varied over time and raided the mainland from islands in the Sea of Japan and East China Sea. Wokou activity in Korea declined after the Treaty of Gyehae in 1443, but continued in Ming China and peaked during the Jiajing wokou raids in the mid-1500s.
