In Hot Pursuit After 1900 Charles Schreyvogel This work depicts an armed Native American on a galloping horse being pursued down a rough mountainside by several riders, who are barely visible in the distance. The instantaneous, snapshotlike view and the fact that the man and his mount appear to be on the verge of plunging into the viewers space amplify the drama. To capture naturalistic effects, Schreyvogel often painted outdoors, studying his models in daylight against the Palisades, the rugged cliffs along the Hudson River near his Hoboken, New Jersey, studio. In history, Marko was a Serbian king who ruled from 1371 to 1395. He is the popular hero of Serbia epic poetry. King Vukasin was his father. His mother was Jevrosima. Marko was said to wear a wolf-skin cap, have a huge mustache, and be drapped in a cloak made of a shaggy wolf pelt. Legend tells of his exploits helping the weak and needy. Marko is also a hero in Bulgarian folklore. The caption for this 1923 illustration reads: They gagged Marko and bound him to his horse. Date: 1637.On a beach like that at Zantvoort, near Haarlem, small fishing boats are hauled up onto the sand and fishermen unload their catch. Potential customers and idle onlookers gather around. The date on this panel, long read as 1629, is certainly 1637. Some coloring in the dunes has been lost through abrasion of the paint layers, which has partially revealed the light brown ground layer and traces of underdrawing.
