A Summerland David Lucas British After John Constable British 1831 View of a rural landscape with a horse drawn plow in the center. In 1827, Constable began work on the project that would occupy his attention until his death seven years later: the publication of a series of prints based on his paintings that would stand as a summary of his achievements. The painter collaborated closely with the engraver David Lucas to create prints that would illustrate Constable's didactic intentionto illustrate the "chiaroscuro of nature." The medium of mezzotint, in which the design is developed from dark to light using a wide range of velvety tones, was eminently suited to the project. View more. A Summerland. Morpeth North (Liber Studiorum, part IV, plate 21) March 29, 1809 Designed and etched by Joseph Mallord William Turner British Turner distilled his ideas about landscape In "Liber Studiorum" (Latin for Book of Studies), a series of seventy prints plus a frontispiece published between 1807 and 1819. To establish the compositions, he made brown watercolor drawings, then etched outlines onto copper plates.
