The Song of Roland' is the oldest surviving major piece of French literature. Scholars usually date it to between 1140 and 1170. The epic of France, it focuses on the theme of Charlemagne, the leader of the Franks (the early French), fighting the Saracens (Muslims/Moors) in Spain. Fearful of the Franks, the Saracens offer to convert to Christianity if the Franks will return home. Roland is chosen as the messenger, but he gives the duty to his father-in -aw Ganelon, who betrays him by suggesting to the Saracens that they ambush the rear of Charlemagne's army, which Roland has volunteered to lead. That is exactly what occurs at Roncesvalles. At first, Roland does not blow his horn to signal to the main army that help is needed as he and his men bravely fight the enemy, but as the numbers of Saracens overwhelm his small force, he does so, so loudly that his temples burst. In this 1916 drawing, Roland is pictured blowing his horn as the Saracen arrows fall about his head and his men.

The First Anglo-Chinese War (1839-42), known popularly as the First Opium War or simply the Opium War, was fought between the United Kingdom and the Qing Dynasty of China over their conflicting viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice. Chinese officials wished to stop what was perceived as an outflow of silver and to control the spread of opium, and confiscated supplies of opium from British traders. The British government, although not officially denying China's right to control imports, objected to this seizure and used its newly developed military power to enforce violent redress. In 1842, the Treaty of Nankingthe first of what the Chinese later called the unequal treatiesgranted an indemnity to Britain, the opening of five treaty ports, and the cession of Hong Kong Island, thereby ending the trade monopoly of the Canton System. The failure of the treaty to satisfy British goals of improved trade and diplomatic relations led to the Second Opium

Qing Imperial court portraits of senior Manchu military officers, known as Bannermen, mid-18th century. From the time China was brought under the rule of the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1683), the banner soldiers became more professional and bureaucratised. Once the Manchus took over governing, they could no longer satisfy the material needs of soldiers by garnishing and distributing booty; instead, a salary system was instituted, ranks standardised, and the Bannermen became a sort of hereditary military caste, though with a strong ethnic inflection. Banner soldiers took up permanent positions, either as defenders of the capital, Beijing, where roughly half of them lived with their families, or in the provinces, where 18 garrisons were established. The largest banner garrisons throughout most of the Qing dynasty were at Beijing, followed by Xi'an and Hangzhou. Sizable banner populations were also placed in Manchuria and at strategic points along the Great Wall, the Yangtze River and Grand Can
