Charlemagne crowned as Emperor by Pope Leo III on 25 December 800. The Coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor refers to a ceremony in which the ruler of Europe's then largest political entity received the Imperial Regalia at the hands of the Pope; symbolizing the pope's alleged right to crown Christian sovereigns; and the emperor's role as protector of the Roman Catholic Church.

In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale "The Dancing Princesses." Here, the 12 princesses are dancing away with their princes. The king has decreed that the person who can solve the nightly mystery of the princesses whereabouts will have his choice of the princesses. So it happens that a man, with the help of a sorcerer, follows the princesses and then makes known their secret. He claims the eldest daughter as his bride.
