French Parish Under Interdict: Archbishop and Action FrancaiseThe parish of Barbentane, a district of some 300 inhabitants has been placed under an interdict by the Archbishop of Aix (Province) as a result of events which took place in connection with the funeral of M. Charles Gautier, a local leader of the Action Francaise. The rites of the church being refused, in accordance with diocesan instructions. A number of supporters of the Action Francaise about Archbishop of Aix, regarding these proceedings as an act of disobedience and a usurpation of the authority of the church, withdrew the clergy from Barbentane and announced that they would not be replaced until otherwise decreed. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 11 1/4 x 6 3/16 in. (28.6 x 15.7 cm). This episode reveals Jesus concern for the outcasts of society: in this case, those afflicted with leprosy, a chronic disease. The leper kneels in the center foreground of the image—dramatically making his plea to Jesus with his bandaged arms upraised. Referring to ancient laws regarding the lepers, Tissot writes that the man occupies the center of the road to permit the healthy to pass with ease on either side of the path. In the Gospel text, Jesus later urges the healed man to keep quiet about the specifics of the miracle but to seek the priests, to acknowledge his cure and regain his place in society and in the Temple. Marches Macerata San Severino Marche S. Agostino, Cathedral. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views of the 15th-century facade with its gothic portal. Views also of the oratory and baroque portal. The interior, restored in 1776 and 1827, is neoclassical. Views in prints H-6 and H-9 show a small barrel-vaulted chapel with a modern main altar painting of the Last Supper. This is either the oratory or a misidentifed church interior. Other views include: wooden crucifixes; an intarsia door to the sacristy and intarsia panels by Indivini; various altar paintings; a silver statue of St. Severino with a crozier, a painting of the Madonna and Child with angels and a kneeling donor by Pinturicchio; a reliquary; a silver plate; a small painted ceramic statue of the Pieta; and a series of sketches from an album of an artist from San Severino Marche.
