Chanthaburi is a town in the east of Thailand, on the banks of the Chanthaburi River. It is the capital of the Chanthaburi Province. The town covers the two tambons Talat and Wat Mai of Mueang Chanthaburi district. As of 2005, the town has a population of 27,602.

THE ABYSSINIAN EXPEDITION

Spain. Journey of the Spanish royal family to the Cantabrian coast. King Alfonso XII (1857-1885), Queen Maria Cristina (1858-1929) and the Infantas Paz and Eulalia. The queen Maria Cristina had promised to visit the town of Suances. On September 14, 1881, the queen and the infantas embarked from Comillas to Suances beach (Santander province). Two ox carts were prepared, as there were no other types of vehicles in the area, for the transportation of the queen, the infantas and servants. Arrival of the royal family to the beach of Suances. This sketch by Louis Delaporte is one of dozens he drew during his two-year venture (1866-68) with the Mekong Exploration Commission sponsored by the French Ministry of the Navy, the intention of which was to lay the groundwork for the expansion of French colonies in Indochina. Traveling the Mekong by boat, the small French delegation voyaged from Saigon to Phnom Penh to Luang Prabang, then farther north into the uncharted waters of Upper Laos and China's Yunnan province, before returning to Hanoi in 1868 by foot, accompanied by porters and elephants.
